DC Scholars Public Charter School is Hiring a STEM Assistant Principal- 24-25 Near Washington, DC

About DC Scholars: 

DC Scholars Public Charter School was founded in 2012 and serves approximately 500 students in Preschool - 8th grade. DC Scholars develops life-long scholars who have the academic knowledge and skills, individual passions, and community-mindedness necessary to succeed in and contribute to an ever-changing world. We have cultivated a mission-oriented and collaborative team. Our staff is enthusiastic about constantly setting and reaching a high bar for students. 

The Position: 

The STEM AP is responsible for articulating and implementing a clear vision for math and science instruction. The STEM AP serves on the School Leadership Team and manages all aspects of the school with an unwavering focus on results. The STEM AP manages two math coaches and directly coaches the K-2 math teacher and science teachers.

Key Responsibilities: 

Schoolwide Leadership: 

  • In collaboration with the School Leadership Team, monitor schoolwide growth and performance. Monitor progress toward goals, analyze trends in student culture and performance, recommend strategies for improvement 
  • In collaboration with the School Leadership Team, conduct regular building walks to observe trends and provide feedback, live coach teachers 
  • Model and uphold school values, routines, norms, and processes, reinforce these expectations through words and actions.
  • Be highly present and visible during arrival and dismissal, transitions, school events, and in classrooms 
  • Facilitate schoolwide activities including: NTO/AO, family events, reenrollment, testing, etc.
  • With manager support and approval, use progressive discipline system to hold teachers accountable to schoolwide expectation.

Math Program: 

  • Articulate the vision for the Math program, including curriculum, block structure, instructional strategies, interventions, and assessment 
  • Create processes, systems, structures and expectations for Math curriculum internalization at the unit and daily level, as well as for making adjustments to curriculum aligned to student data trends 
  • Participate in and give input to the drafting of performance evaluations for Math teachers and teacher associates 
  • Lead Math professional development
  • Coach and develop Math instructional coaches; ensure that math teacher coaches have the critical knowledge, training, and skills necessary to effectively support teachers within their grade bands. 
  • Directly coach the K-2 math teachers and teacher associates 
    • Lead teachers through a continuous improvement cycle 
    • Supervise and support intellectual and practical preparation through unit and lesson unpacking, intellectual prep meetings, and lesson plan feedback. 
    • Facilitate daily exit ticket review and reteach planning 
    • Conduct announced and unannounced classroom observations, providing written and in-person feedback that drives continuous growth in teacher practice and student achievement
    • Maintain up-to-date and accurate records of teacher progress connected to coaching goals
  • Consistently analyze multiple data points, including attendance, achievement data, and classroom observations; make necessary adjustments and recommend program improvements 
  • Oversee the Math assessment program, ensure all assessments are administered with fidelity 
  • Oversee the implementation of Math intervention programming 
  • Audit, organize, and store math curriculum materials 
  • Support with grant compliance and reporting as requested

Science Program: 

  • Articulate the vision for the science program
  • Establish science pacing calendars 
  • Set expectations for science lesson planning and monitor lesson plan submission 
  • In conjunction with science teachers, coordinate the annual science fair 
  • Observe science teachers biweekly 

Assessment Management: 

  • Coordinate 2-8 Common Interim Assessment Management for ELA and Math 
  • Coordinate K-8 iReady Assessment Administration for ELA and Math 

Background and Experience

  • At least 2 years of school-based leadership experience 
  • Ability to model exemplary instructional and classroom culture practices
  • Deep content knowledge and understanding of Common Core Standards and best practices
  • Experience implementing DC Scholars Curricular programs (Eureka Math, Amplify Science) preferred 
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to build relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders, including teachers, students, parents, and other administrators
  • Outstanding organizational skills and the ability to juggle and prioritize many tasks and responsibilities at one time
