What Your Day Will Look LikeUnder direction, you will provide basic health services to students, assisting in the planning and implementation of school health programs in cooperation with medical authority and school administrative personnel. You will evaluate the health status of students and the health service program, provide instruction in health practices, first aid, child care, and other related subjects, and serve as a resource pertaining to student health management strategies and welfare and attendance problems and concerns. You will facilitate the educational process by removing health related barriers to learning. This will include:
  • Participating in planning programs that eliminate or minimize health problems of students that may interfere with learning.
  • Initiating, maintaining, and annually reviewing student health records.
  • Assisting with training and education of paraprofessionals in proper techniques for medical treatments or procedures.
  • Identifying health problems of students through health assessment, health histories, review of health records, and screening programs.
  • Implementing all screening programs and preparing annual reports mandated by Indiana law including the following:
    • Vision: Grades 1, 3, and 8
    • Hearing: Grades 1, 4, 7, 10 (These may be done by a speech pathologist).
    • Scoliosis: Grades 5, 7, and 9.
  • Communicating current health problems, needs, and concerns of students to their parents and appropriate school staff.
  • Participating on the child study team, assisting in the identification of students with disabilities and interpreting health factors pertinent to the student’s disability.
  • Developing and maintaining a system for providing first aid and emergency care.
  • Working with the school secretary to administer medications and treatments to students per physician’s order and parent authorization.
  • Providing health counseling to students to assist them in making decisions regarding their health and health behaviors.
  • Assisting students and parents in identifying and utilizing available and appropriate community health resources.
  • Facilitating the attainment of students’ health needs by providing support to students and their families.
  • Providing educational opportunities for students to assist them in developing self-care skills to deal with health problems.
  • Providing consultation and assistance to teachers in their planning, implementation, and evaluation of health education units.
  • Providing in-service educational opportunities for school staff on health-related issues.
  • Collaborating with community agencies, health professionals, and school staff to identify the health needs, current and potential, of children and youth to facilitate school and community planning and intervention.
  • Performing lice, scabies, and impetigo screening and providing assistance with treatment.
  • Working with school building administrators in collecting and maintaining immunization records and preparing the annual immunization report for the Indiana State Department of Health due November 1 each year.
  • Providing classroom instruction to students on health related issues as specified by the Superintendent of Schools.
  • This position is Monday through Friday, 7 hours a day, 35 hours per week..

  • You have knowledge of the principles, methods, techniques, strategies, and trends in educational health services, applicable health appraisal methods, and techniques and procedures.

  • You have an understanding of the social, emotional, and behavioral characteristics of student clients.
  • You have experience with health services program evaluation and research techniques, strategies, and procedures, and with the appropriate curriculum and instructional programs pertaining to student health education.
  • You have the ability to assist students in effectively dealing with health issues, problems, and concerns.
  • You can effectively work with site and district personnel, parents, social service, and youth service agencies in resolving student health problems and concerns.
  • You can effectively participate in the planning and implementation of health instructional processes.
  • You can establish and maintain effective organizational, public, and community relationships.
