MECHANIC ASSISTANT Location: Cape May-Lewes Ferry, Cape May, NJ $23.82 per hour ($49,548 annualized) Opening Date: May 24, 2024 Closing Date: June 24, 2024 I. POSITION SUMMARY Perform any and all duties assigned by Assistant Port Engineer, Port Engineer, and department leads. Required to work independently and assist other trades. Responsible for following established safety practices while performing assigned duties to protect self, co-workers and the public from personal injury and to prevent damage to Authority property. This position is a bargaining unit position that is represented by the Marine Engineers' Beneficial Association (MEBA). II. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES * Cleaning shop and other work areas on vessels * Assist mechanics, welders, and/or electricians/electronic technicians in performance of their jobs including painting, cleaning parts, running errands, and safety lookout * Pick up and deliver parts, use of motor vehicles, use of a forklift * Clean equipment or vehicles * Perform tasks directed by supervisors, mechanics, electricians or welders * The use of all types of mechanical hand tools as well as the use of air and electrically operated hand tools such as drills, grinders and saws * The use of surface preparation tools, painting equipment, and pressure washer II. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES * Basic knowledge of a variety of hand tools and must have good mechanical aptitude * Ability to understand written and oral instructions * Physical coordination and moderate strength for heavier jobs * Ability to provide superior customer service to everyone by conducting oneself in a courteous, respectful and efficient manner III. REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE * Proof of citizenship or resident status * Must be 18 years or older * High school diploma or equivalent or equivalent experience IV. LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, AND CERTIFICATES * Valid driver's license * Transportation Worker's Identification Card (TWIC) and Merchant Mariner's Credential obtained within six (6) months V. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS * Subject to background investigation and pre-employment physical including drug test * Delaware River and Bay Authority requires all employees to have direct deposit with a financial institution or enroll in the payroll card program to receive their biweekly pay * Willing and able to attend shipyard events and work at remote locations for extended periods of time. * Willing and able to work in extreme temperatures (heat/cold/humidity). * Willing and able to work in confined spaces and may be required to use a respirator. * Willing to work on high ladders, or aloft or over the side of the vessel if needed. * Willing and able to sail on vessel in licensed capacity as needed * Willing and available for duty at such hours, day or night, as may be required in order to maintain continuous operation of this facility If you are interested in applying for this position, please complete the on-line application at www.drba.net.
