MS/HS THEATER AND ELECTIVES TEACHER

The teacher’s job is to ensure all students learn the basic and essential skills at each grade level or subject area, while maintaining morals and standards of character that are positive examples for all students and reflect positively on Lincoln Charter School.

Responsibilities include:

Theater Instruction:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive theater curriculum covering acting, directing, stagecraft, and theater history.
  • Plan, direct, and produce school theater productions (2 productions a year highly recommended), ensuring students gain hands-on experience in all aspects of theater production.
  • Teach students the fundamentals of performance, including voice, movement, improvisation, and script analysis.
  • Foster a supportive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages artistic expression and teamwork.
  • After school responsibilities in line with major theater production(s) will exceed regular school day duties and time is compensated. 

Elective Courses:

  • Design and deliver engaging elective courses that meet the diverse interests of MS/HS students. Elective topics may include (but are not limited to) visual arts, digital media, creative writing, or other areas of expertise.
  • Develop lesson plans that incorporate a variety of instructional strategies to meet the needs of all learners.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to integrate elective courses into the overall school curriculum and enhance cross-disciplinary learning.

Instructional Process

  • Plans and implements a program of instruction that adheres to the School’s philosophy, goals and objectives as outlined in the adopted courses of study;
  • Makes purposeful and appropriate lesson plans which provide for effective teaching strategies and maximizes time on task; Utilizes pacing guides
  • Creates a classroom environment conducive to learning by employing a variety of appropriate teaching strategies
  • Keeps current in subject matter knowledge and is willing to share this knowledge for the continual improvement of the school’s curriculum;
  • Assists in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials;
  • The teacher will also create and deliver elective courses that cater to the interests and developmental needs of students, fostering creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking.

Classroom Management

  • Develops developmentally appropriate rules for classroom behavior and appropriate discipline techniques which are consistently applied;
  • Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities;
  • Shares responsibility during the school day for supervision of students in all areas of the school;

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Theater, Performing Arts, Education, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Teaching certification or license in the relevant subject area.
  • Experience teaching MS/HS school students and a passion for working with this age group.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to create a positive and engaging learning environment that fosters student creativity and growth.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with set design, lighting, sound, and costume design.
  • Proven experience in theater production and instruction, with a strong background in various aspects of theater arts.
  • Knowledge of current educational technology and its application in the classroom.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and contribute to a positive school culture.
  • Strong commitment to professional growth and development.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment used in theater productions.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and move around the classroom and performance spaces for extended periods.

Public Relations

  • Upholds and enforces board policy, administrative procedures, and school rules and regulations; and is supportive of them to the public;
  • Maintains appropriate work habits, including regular and punctual attendance and appropriate use of conference and planning time;
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative relations with other staff;
  • Uses the School-assigned computer and email account for appropriate professional actions;
  • Respects the confidentiality of records and information regarding students, parents, and teachers in accordance with accepted professional ethics, state and federal laws;

Professional Growth

  • Continued professional growth through attendance at workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced coursework at institutions of higher learning;
  • Cooperates with the administration in planning appropriate in-service training programs;
  • Attends staff, department, and committee meetings as required;
  • Adheres to timeline, due dates and reporting requirements.

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree from regionally accredited college/university

  • Valid NC teaching license required (or out of state license with reciprocity)
