What you need to qualify (Minimum qualifications)
  • Two years of experience determining eligibility for an agency program by interviewing to assess the needs of clients and interpreting and applying the policies, rules, and guidelines applicable to the client's situation.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience relative to the class concept.

Essential attributes
We are looking for candidates with:
  • Experience communicating decisions regarding the approval or denial of benefits or services while delivering customer service that continually exceeds expectations.
  • Experience using time management, organization, and prioritization skills to meet deadlines and working in a fast-paced environment with a demonstrated level of integrity.
  • Demonstrated experience creating and maintaining written documentation of activities concerning individual clients.
  • Experience researching, interpreting, and applying policies, rules, & regulations to work, while maintaining high accuracy completing detailed & technical work.
  • Demonstrated experience with technical skills that include computer and search engine knowledge, email communication and learning new web-based platforms.
  • Experience providing customer service that is person centered and
    trauma informed
    .

Your duties at a glance
As an employee working in the
Self-Sufficiency Program
(SSP), you will have an opportunity to provide resources and services to help people move out of poverty and toward whole well-being. Programs include food benefits, cash assistance, childcare assistance, services for domestic violence survivors, resources for refugees and support for youth experiencing homelessness.
As a Benefit & Eligibility Worker, you will:
  • Assist the agency mission of poverty prevention and family engagement by accurately determining eligibility, redeterminations, periodic reviews, and updates to changes for ODHS for programs provided by Self Sufficiency program which include Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Medical Programs includes (MAGI and Non-MAGI),Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), Employment Related Day Care (ERDC), Oregon Health Authority (OHA), and Department of Early Learning and Care (DELC) programs.
  • Interview applicants in person, by phone, by email to gather information needed to assess and determine if there is a need for services and benefits.
  • Assessing client family strengths and needs, connecting families to other resources and programs.
  • Update narrative report summarizing new information from client and collateral sources, findings of home visit, and conclusions.
  • Actively seeks to provide culturally appropriate services where individuals are treated respectfully, compassionately, and effectively in a manner that recognizes, affirms, and values the worth of children, individuals, families and communities, protecting and preserving the dignity of each. This includes; culture, language; national origin; class; race; age; ethnic background; disability; stages of development; religion; gender; sexual orientation and other differences or diversity factors.
  • Many eligibility positions will soon be moving under the Oregon Eligibility Partnership (OEP).

Working conditions
  • Your work will be conducted in the Office and Community with Potential (Hybrid) work.
  • Your work schedule will be 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. PST, Monday – Friday. Occasionally you will need to adjust your schedule based on service need.
  • You may interact with a wide range of people including some who have experienced trauma and may exhibit challenges in controlling their emotions.
  • Fast-paced position that includes a high volume of individual, family, and community partner contact.
  • The work schedule for this position will be determined by business need. Also based on business need, this position may be relocated to other offices or to out stationed sites within the district.
  • Rarely, you may have required overnight travel to attend statewide meetings and trainings.
