**************************** DUTIES *************************************

  • You will identify and correct discrepancies in equipment on vessels which may cause a safety hazard to personnel or property.
  • You will maintain craft safety during navigation by following the rules of the road and seamanship rules.
  • You will operate deck cranes, winches, capstans, and firefighting equipment under the technical direction of a supervisor or higher level crew member.
  • You will handle lines and cables during docking, moving, and towing operations.

************************** QUALIFICATIONS ***************************

1) Use basic techniques of anchoring and mooring a variety of small craft and specialized research vessels;

2) When painting, prepare standard surfaces and use coating methods and techniques ; and

3) Perform minor maintenance and repair to deck machinery and engine room propulsion equipment.

Working under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.

**************** CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT *********************************

  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.

  • Per E.O. 14043, selectee(s) must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 by 11/22/2021 or date of employment (which ever comes later) except in limited circumstances where an exemption is approved due to a disability or sincerely held religious beliefs.
  • Incumbent may be assigned to a similar position at any site or workstation within the Hampton Roads area.
  • Incumbent may be designated as Alpha personnel and as such will be required when contacted to respond to emergency calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver?s license.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • Incumbent must successfully complete the OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER training and 8-hour annual refresher training.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Incumbent is required to become CPR certified.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $22.86 - $26.67 per hour
