DePaul Talent Acquisition is Hiring an Assistant Director, Athletic Academic Advising Near Chicago, IL

The Highlights:
Guided by the mission of DePaul University, within the guidelines of the NCAA, the BIG EAST Conference, and DePaul University, and reporting to the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Academic Advising and Student-Athlete Development, the Assistant Director for Athletic Academic Advising, serves as an advocate/ally for student-athletes and assists them in navigating the University from the initial recruitment stages through job placement or graduate school acceptance upon graduation. The Assistant Director also oversees the department’s book scholarship, technology and equipment checkout programs. Athletic Academic Advising reports to the Division of Student Affairs and works closely with the Athletic Department.

What You'll Do:

  • Advising, Advocacy and NCAA Eligibility Certification 
    • Provides academic advising and support to assigned teams (currently men's basketball and women's tennis) which includes but is not limited to weekly meetings, supervising study table, quarterly registration, tracking progress toward degree/NCAA academic eligibility and communication with key stakeholders including student-athletes, tutors, faculty, coaches and athletic administration.
    • Travels with men’s basketball to all away competitions during the academic year and often works extended (evening and weekend) hours during the season. • Provides educational workshops (study skills, note taking, time management, etc.) for men's basketball student-athletes as needed.
    • Manages the department’s quarterly/annual grade/GPA reporting procedures sharing relevant data with coaches, athletic and student affairs administrators, DePaul's Faculty Athletics Representative and the BIG EAST Conference as well as informing various award nomination processes. Uses the information to nominate student-athletes for awards given by DePaul, the BIG EAST Conference, coaching associations and the NCAA.
    • Oversees the department’s assessment efforts including writing the annual assessment report, assists in writing the annual report and serves on the Division of Student Affairs Assessment Committee.
    • Meets with prospective student-athletes and their families as requested by coaches and provides materials to coaches to use in their recruitment activities. • Creates and maintains relationships across campus to effectively advocate for student-athletes and advance the mission of Athletic Academic Advising. 
    • Serves on divisional, university and conference committees, represents the department at functions and events, participates in professional development opportunities and attends monthly DePaul Academic Advising Network meetings.
    Textbook distribution, technology/equipment, and school programs (25%)
    • Manages the department’s book scholarship, school supply (notebooks, folders, pens, pencils, highlighters, etc.) and equipment checkout (laptops, calculators, i-clickers, cameras, microphones, etc.) programs.
    • Coordinates the men’s and women’s basketball laptop distribution and set-up process in collaboration with the business office and compliance.
  • NCAA Compliance 
    • Knowledge of and adherence to all applicable BIG EAST and NCAA rules, policies and procedures.
    • Attend and participate in monthly NCAA rules compliance meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Academic Advising and Student-Athlete Development.
  • Oversees student worker staff of approximately 10 undergraduate students.

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor's degree required, master's degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, Sport Management, Counseling, Education or related field preferred
  • 3-5 years athletic academic advising or related experience
  • Direct experience working one-on-one with students with learning disabilities preferred
  • Previous experience at the NCAA Division I level, tutoring/teaching college students, and/or training, learning and development a plus
  • Knowledge of current student-athlete issues, resources to support student-athletes, Teamworks, JumpForward and PC applications including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint as well as the ability to adapt to new technologies

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication and organizational skills, strong attention to detail, service oriented and committed to the academic success of DePaul student-athletes.
  • Knowledge of NCAA Division I academic eligibility standards and necessary legislation, FERPA,student-athlete issues.
  • During the academic year, the Assistant Director works extended hours including evening and weekends and travels with assigned teams as needed. Expected to respond to issues in a timely fashion which often requires contact with stakeholders in the evenings or on weekends.
