DePaul University is Hiring a Supervisor, Library Stacks Maintenance (On-Site) Near Chicago, IL

The HighlightsThe Library Stacks Maintenance Supervisor (LSM Supervisor) provides circulation services to students, faculty, Staff, Alumni, Retirees, and other Library users. In collaboration with the Head of Access Services , subject librarians, and the technical services department, the LSM Supervisor manages all stack maintenance procedures and activities to ensure collection health, provide space for collection growth, and facilitate a user-friendly stacks browsing experience. The LSM Supervisor collaborates with the Digital Services department to maintain the ILS integrated stack location map. As a part of the night and weekend staff rotation, the LSM Supervisor supervises evening and weekend Access Services operations and student staff.
The Library Stacks Maintenance Supervisor will work in a highly-supportive and collegial culture that encourages active participation in meaningful and valuable skills training and professional development. This includes workshops, committee memberships, and engagement in programs that support the Library's mission and its inclusion, diversity, equity, and access goals, while building connections and partnerships across DePaul's wider academic and user community.
What You'll Do
  • Facilitate access to library materials Provides circulation desk services (directional assistance, general library material borrowing, print course reserves access, facilitate I-share and interlibrary loan request pick-up from the hold shelf, equipment and loanable technology lending, copy / print / scan station assistance, and general study room reservation assistance) to students, faculty and other library users.
  • Stacks Maintenance In collaboration with the Head of Access Services, subject librarians, and the technical services department, manages all stack maintenance procedures and activities to ensure collection health, provide space for collection growth, and facilitate a user-friendly stacks browsing experience, including re-shelving, shelf-reading, shelf-shifting, shelf-facing, dusting, call number range relabeling, weeding, minor book repair, problem books assessments (i.e. library materials with damage, wear beyond repair, mold, brittle pages and covers), and call number label relabeling. The LSM is responsible for looking at areas around stacks periodically for water damage (especially during wet weather conditions) and reporting to the Library Administration Office promptly and forwarding information regarding items to the Technical Services department to be withdrawn or replaced due to condition or lost / missing status.
  • Supervise and mentor student workers As a part of the night and weekend staff rotation, supervise evening and weekend Access Services operations and student staff. This includes assigning delegated Access Services functional area tasks for completion and arranging adequate front desk support.
  • Stack Maps In collaboration with the Head of Access Services and the Digital Services department, maintain ILS integrated stack location map including updating system to reflect all shelf range changes due to weeding and shifting projects and changes in indexed collections locations.
  • Statistics Maintains monthly and annual statistics for shelving and problem books for internal and external library assessment tools and statistical reporting.
  • Directly supervise student assistants during scheduled times at the Access Services Desk. Assign tasks to student employees daily. Be familiar with applicable policies and procedures for student employees at DePaul.
What You'll Need
  • Associate degree required. Bachelor's degree or Library Technical Assistant certification preferred.
  • Experience providing customer service in a fast-paced environment required. Previous library experience preferred.
  • One year of experience supervising staff or supervising an area of operations is preferred.
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills (email, Microsoft Office Suite, Google Docs) required. Experience with Alma or other integrated library systems preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and effectively interact with people across cultural identities and foster an inclusive, equitable, and welcoming environment.
  • This position is full-time at 35 hours/week. Hours are set at the start of each academic quarter in line with the needs of the department. Evening and weekend hours will be required.
  • This position is on-site at the John T. Richardson Library in Lincoln park; occasional travel to the Loop campus may be required.
