Central State Hospital (CSH), a State of Virginia mental health hospital located near Petersburg, VA, is recruiting for a full-time Security Lieutenants to join our progressive team within Security. The Security Lieutenant provides for the oversight of Public Safety Officers on the Petersburg Campus of DBHDS and to provide an efficient and effective means of reducing crimes and safety hazards through education, patrol, investigations, recovery of property and fire prevention.
Job Duties:
  • Serves as a Role Model to officers while completing all Public Safety duties;
  • Patrols within statutory jurisdiction; properties, buildings, and parking lots by foot, vehicle, or as assigned to establish a visible presence to deter criminal activity and to detect incidents compromising safety and security;
  • Responds to calls for service in a timely manner;
  • Assist local law enforcement with investigations;
- Demonstrates the skill to analyze and solve problems - this refers to the gathering of information, anticipation of problems, weighing of consequences, soundness of decisions, and determining if enforcement action is required;
  • Ensures that facilities and occupants are secure and safe through sound practices;
  • Takes appropriate enforcement actions for criminal law violations consistent with Department policies and Virginia State Code;
  • Using a dispatched system, receive emergency and non-emergency calls for service, requesting police, fire protection and support service; determine the nature, location; priority, and dispatch the appropriate public safety officer or tradesman without delay;
  • Maintain an up to date 24-hour report that includes date, officers on duty, assignments, and reflects the activities that occur on the shift;
  • Conduct inspection of patrol vehicles at the beginning of each shift, ensuring there are no damages. Documenting findings on 24-hour report and email Chief of Security;
  • Use approved Security Devices to identify and deter contraband;
  • Maintains cooperative working relationship with supervisor, peers and other disciplines and patients;
  • Makes rounds on a daily basis checking for breeches in security, safety, and sanitation, and take action related to all detected deficiencies;
  • Other duties assigned
The knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the job include knowledge of law enforcement, and the ability to compose clear and concise investigative reports and other written communication; the ability to read and understand departmental policies, procedures, instructions, law and regulations; the ability to operate a motor vehicle in a safe manner and be able to perform preventive operator’s maintenance; ability to become certified as a DCJS unarmed Security Officer. Perform effective searches of property; interpersonal skills for dealing with sensitive, emotional or potentially controversial interpersonal situations. Exhibit the ability to operate a personal computer and perform data entry; and the ability to work any of the Three (3) permanent shifts or for a specific period of time, or any required overtime to meet campus and/or departmental needs

Minimum Qualifications

  • A valid Virginia Driver's License
  • Experience in Security and Mental Health
  • Ability to become certified as a DCJS unarmed Security Officer


Additional Considerations

  • Previous supervisory and/or leadership/trainer experience is preferred.
