DESERT BOTANICAL GARDEN is Hiring a CHILDREN'S EDUCATION SUPERVISOR Near Phoenix, AZ

Description

Responsible for the daily operations in the Children’s Education Programs. Plan and facilitate related children and family classes and workshops. Work collaboratively with the Children’s Education Team and other members of the department to achieve the department’s annual and long-range goals within the mission of the Garden.

Essential Duties

Program Administration 

  • Responsible for the maintenance, design and daily implementation of programming spaces utilized by the Children’s Education department .
  • Develop and implement both independent and facilitated programming for camps, families , teens, early childhood ages, scouts, schools and garden-wide events. 
  • Achieve projected revenue and expense goals and maintain budgeting records.
  • Write and develop Children’s Education curriculum.
  • Support the Children’s Education Manager with grant summaries and documentation material including program attendance and participation.

Human Resources

  • Hire, supervise, mentor, coach, and evaluate Children’s Education seasonal staff. 
  • Recruit, train, and schedule volunteers.

Marketing & Outreach

  • Support Children’s Education Manager to develop and implement marketing and outreach strategies for all programming, including catalog copy, website updates, social media and survey campaigns.

Garden and Department Support

  • Assist with planning and facilitating children and family classes and workshops. 
  • Participate in department and Garden staff meetings, planning teams, and events.
  • Provide excellent customer service to all visitors. Respond to general questions and assist with registration for all Children’s programming.
  • Collaborate with various departments in cross-department planning, event logistics and incorporating children’s education content across the garden. 
  • Responsible for animal husbandry and care for the Children’s Education Animals including feeding, health needs, etc. 

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Science, Museum Studies or relevant work experience preferred.
  • Minimum of three years combined program facilitation experience in education, informal learning or public programs.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising, mentoring and evaluating staff.
  • Demonstrated experience with programmatic development including both formal and informal programs. 
  • Ability to engage with children ages 0 – 18 and adult caregivers.
  • Possess an optimistic, open-minded and flexible attitude in a wide range of situations. 
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Experience working with volunteers.
  • Flexibility to work well with a team and independently.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
  • Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Pay Range: $47,000.00 - $52,000.00

Equipment Used

Typical office equipment. This role also uses multiple toys, games, and tools to facilitate outdoor learning and enjoyment.

Internal Communication

Frequent communication with Garden employees and volunteers. 

External Communication

Limited

Working Conditions

Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time. The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc. and to move around the Garden. Position self to move in a stooping or kneeling manner. Frequently moves equipment up to 25 pounds across the Garden for various classroom and event needs. Some of the work will occur in a traditional office setting, however, a good portion of the supervisor’s time will be spent outdoors and subject to extreme weather.
