DescriptionThe primary focus of a Fab Technician or Fabricator is to perform a variety of welding to complete structural repair and fabrication on various vehicles and equipment. The Fabricator designs and fabricates metal components and structures, hydraulics, electronics lighting, and vocational equipment improve existing designs and reliability. Inspects and performs routine maintenance on light, heavy and specialized equipment.
Essential Responsibilities
  • Study and interpret assembly instructions.
  • Listen to and follow directions from supervisors.
  • Fabricate and assemble components on Medium and Heavy Duty trucks.
  • Determine if all parts needed for the job are present, read, and interpret blueprints and sketches.
  • Assemble tools and materials, position parts and subassemblies.
  • Verify specifications of the Fabrication job.
  • Resolve assembly and production issues.
  • Complete Preventative Maintenance as needed.
  • Troubleshoot malfunctions and perform repairs as needed.
  • Ensure working space is clean and safe.
  • Complete quality controls.
  • Accurately records time, cause and correction on Repair Orders.
  • Routinely use computerized equipment and specialized tooling.
  • Completes assigned repairs and tasks in a timely and safe manner.
  • Participate and completes technical training and professional development.

Manual dexterity: A high level of manual dexterity is essential for a heavy-duty diesel technician to handle tools, components, and equipment with precision, and perform tasks such as disassembling, repairing, and reassembling engine parts.
Lifting: This role often involves lifting heavy components or tools. The technician should have the physical strength and ability to safely lift and move heavy objects, following proper lifting techniques to prevent injury.
Working hours: Heavy-duty diesel technicians may work varying shifts, including evenings, weekends, and potentially on-call or emergency repair shifts, as diesel engine maintenance and repairs are often required outside of regular business hours.
