DeWitt seeks a full-time Legal Assistant with five or more years of law firm experience for its Brookfield, Wisconsin office in the Litigation Practice Group. A DeWitt employee must be a team player, detail-oriented, have a proven work ethic, and have excellent communication skills. Savvy technical skills, professionalism, and the capability to assist the workflow of multiple attorneys within the practice group will make you a well-rounded candidate.

Responsibilities:

  • Case Management: Assist attorneys in managing various business litigation cases, including organizing case files, maintaining calendars, and tracking important deadlines.
  • Document Preparation: Draft, proofread, and edit legal documents, including pleadings, motions, discovery requests and responses, and other court filings.
  • Legal Research: Conduct thorough legal research using various databases and resources to support attorneys in preparing for hearings, depositions, and trials.
  • Communication: Communicate with clients, opposing counsel, court personnel, and other relevant parties professionally and courteously, both in writing and orally.
  • E-Discovery: Manage electronic discovery processes, including data collection, review, and production in compliance with court rules and legal requirements.
  • Trial Preparation: Assist in trial preparation, including organizing trial exhibits, witness coordination, and maintaining trial notebooks.
  • Administrative Support: Provide administrative support to attorneys, such as scheduling meetings, handling incoming calls, and managing attorney time and billing records.
  • Filing and Docketing: File documents with state and federal courts and maintain accurate docketing records for all cases.
  • Compliance: Stay up-to-date with changes in court rules, local rules, and procedural requirements to ensure compliance with legal standards.
  • Database Management: Use relevant software and databases to maintain and organize electronic case files, legal documents, and client information.
  • Team Collaboration: Collaborate with other legal assistants, paralegals, and attorneys to ensure seamless workflow and support within the business litigation department.
  • Client billing activities include time entry, proofreading, modifying, and sending client invoices.
  • Client intake, scheduling support, expense reimbursement management, and administrative support for two full-time attorneys.
  • Assist additional attorneys as needed during support staff paid time off.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior law firm experience in litigation is required.
  • Knowledge of litigation procedures, specifically including deadlines and case progression.
  • Microsoft Office Suite proficiency, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and MS Teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written, and strong client service acumen.
  • Aptness to work independently, as well as part of a team.
  • Strong time management skills for undertaking a large volume of work.
  • Ability to grasp concepts quickly and efficiently.
  • Strong time management skills and capacity to work well in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Dedication to accuracy and thoroughness in work product.
