Diné Development Corporation is Hiring an Archaeologist Near Shiprock, NM

BRIC, a subsidiary of DDC, is currently and continually seeking qualified applicants for temporary, on-call Archaeological Field Technician positions to support ongoing and upcoming archaeological survey, excavation, and monitoring projects in New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona and on the Navajo Nation. We have an immediate need for experienced temporary on-call archaeologists for multiple field work projects based out of our Albuquerque, New Mexico office. Candidates who can only work on-call or part-time are urged to apply. Primary duties will include assisting with background research, conducting archaeological surveys and construction monitoring projects. Work will include both one-day and multiple-day assignments. We anticipate that employment will begin immediately. While these are classified as temporary positions, we anticipate enough work to continue employment following initial projects.
Successful candidates should be motivated, resourceful, dedicated, and organized, and able to walk several miles per day over uneven terrain . All candidates will work under the supervision of a Field Director or Project Director.
Job Duties And Responsibilities
  • Technicians are responsible for performing common tasks associated with archaeological investigations and surveys within the archaeological project area. These include, but not limited to:
  • Perform pedestrian walkover survey, controlled surface survey
  • Complete field related paperwork in a legible manner
  • May assist in technical site mapping, photography and feature and artifact documentation
  • Use of handheld GPS units for site mapping, and site form preparation.
  • All applicants must be able to walk up to 12 miles per day in difficult terrain and extreme weather carrying a 30-pound pack.
  • Monitoring of ground disturbing construction/activity; often for long hours and several weeks
  • Ability to be travel and be away from home for long periods of time
  • Successful candidates should be motivated, resourceful, dedicated, and organized, able to take direction, and contribute to a team.
Job Requirements (Education/Skills/Experience)
  • A Bachelor's Degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field
  • Experience conducting archaeological survey in the Southwest
  • Have completed an accredited field school
  • Six (6) months field experience with a range of field methodologies, including survey, testing, excavation, and monitoring is preferred
  • Ability to work well in a team-based environment
  • Able to maintain a positive attitude while working in adverse conditions
  • Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, often at high altitudes, and the ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required
  • Willing to travel overnight for an extended period of time
  • Current valid driver's license and a clean driving record
  • Must be a US Citizen with the ability to pass a standard background check.
Preferred
  • Strong writing skills
  • Familiarity with GPS units and digital data collection is a plus but not required.
  • Experience driving a four-wheeled drive vehicle off-road in or on rugged, backcountry roads
  • Familiarity with typical electrical utility operations and maintenance activities
  • Experience working around heavy machinery and communicating with maintenance crews
Additional NotesThis position is on-call, non-exempt (hourly), and not eligible for benefits such as medical, personal, vacation, sick, or holiday pay. Pay will be commensurate with the applicant’s experience. Hotels are provided on most projects but camping may be required for certain projects. A generous per diem will be provided for camping projects. When overtime work is required, the employee will be compensated with overtime pay in accordance with applicable laws. On one-day work assignments, employee will be reimbursed for mileage driven to and from field locations. On multiple-day assignments and when long distance travel is required (most projects) we pay travel time if mobilizing company equipment. In some cases we may be able to provide airfare. All lodging and per diem consistent with project location are provided. Advance per diem may be available on select projects.
