POSITION: Crisis Counselor

EXEMPT STATUS: Exempt

NUMBER OF DAYS: 197

PAY GRADE: Admin/Prof-PG4

DEPARTMENT: Counseling

REPORTS TO: Director of Guidance & Counseling

SUPERVISES: None

EDUCATION: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, School Counseling or related field
  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Holds license and/or certificate in mental health

EXPERIENCE: One year successful experience working with adolescents in a counseling environment

Position Function/Purpose

Provides counseling support services to assigned students and will provide consultation services to all MISD staff to support the overall mental health goals of the district. The crisis counselor will strive to reduce student risk factors, such as stress, anxiety and depression, and support students through development of coping skills and stress management to ensure the opportunity for student success.

This position is federal/title funded and there is no guarantee of the position if funds are no longer available.

Major Responsibilities

Instructional Management

  1. Provide counseling services and crisis intervention to assigned students.
  2. Provide referrals for service such as medical care, and psychiatric services when needed.
  3. Case manages students as needed.
  4. Document all sessions, contacts, and attempted contacts in the client’s progress notes.
  5. Maintain professional standards through confidentiality agreement, provided treatment, documentation and consolation.
  6. Attend training and professional development to improve skills.
  7. Comply with departmental polices, legal requirements, and professional; ethical and quality standards.
  8. Ability to not only interact and communicate effectively with clients and their families but also with larger school community of educators, administrators, counselors, and healthcare professionals.

School/Community Relations

  1. Provide parent education classes on a bi-monthly basis or as needed.
  2. Provide staff education classes as needed.

Administration

  1. Provide principals with written progress reports.
  2. Collect and report data to campus principals.
  3. Keep informed of and comply with state, district and campus regulations and policies.

Other Duties

  1. Perform such other duties as may be assigned or necessary for job effectiveness.

Qualification Requirements

Minimum Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or related field.
  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Holds license in mental health.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Strong communication and supervisory skills
  • Ability to work well with a diverse population

Minimum Experience:

  • One year successful experience working with adolescents in a counseling environment.
