District of Columbia Bar is Hiring a Program Specialist, Communities Near Washington, DC

Job Description

The Communities Office supports programming developed by and for the voluntary practice specialty and interest-focused entities (Communities) of the D.C. Bar and implements selected D.C. Bar signature events including the D.C. Cup Moot Court Competition, the Melvin R. Wright Youth Law Fair, and the annual Tax Conference. The Program Specialist provides planning and implementation support for these events. The role also contributes to the overall administrative, communication, and strategic objectives of the Communities Office as well as those of the Programs Office and larger D.C. Bar to bolster member engagement.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Supports programs sponsored by the D.C. Bar Communities Office including substantive educational sessions of 1-2 hours, multi-day educational conferences, receptions, and other events.

• Follows established plans of action for execution of events and develops strategies for enhancing such plans to maximize staff and financial resources and to strengthen member satisfaction.

• Collaborates with managers and colleagues in the execution of logistical functions of events, including day-of responsibilities such as overseeing set up, responding to member and volunteer requests, serving as on-site registrar, and finding solutions to pop up challenges.

• Analyzes program data (registration, attendance, demographics, costs) for insights.

• Provides support on publications and sales of D.C. Practice Manual and other publications.

• Coordinates staff teams on an ad hoc basis to execute event functions or special projects.

• Supports technology needed for assigned in-person, remote, or hybrid programming.

• Coordinates programming, internal service providers, vendors, outside partners, and others to execute logistical functions.

• Maintains accurate records of event-related activities and processes.

• Conducts research to support the development of plans of action, the acquisition of external resources, and the implementation of best practices for event planning and project management.

• Collaborates with other Communities staff to review email marketing and communications for events and services, including additional social media and other forms of outreach.

• Participates in developing and responding to correspondence for Outreach Programs such as Youth Law Fair, Moot Court, and other events.

• Supports registration and other functions for Programs Office events such as the Celebration of Leadership, Judicial Bar Conference, Lawyers Have Heart, or other special events.

• Responds to member and volunteer requests through email and phone calls.

• Makes program and ceremonial announcements including the introduction of speakers and provision of information on program rules, guidelines, agenda, and formats.

• Contributes to the development and implementation of special projects that support the strategic direction of the D.C. Bar.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Must be able to work outside normal business hours and be able to travel to various locations throughout the District of Columbia.

• Prior experience coordinating multi-faceted events and meetings.

• Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working environment.

• Proficient in managing remote meeting platforms.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

• Proficient in database management and Microsoft 365.

• Must be detail oriented and deadline driven. Able to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.

• Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. Must work well in a team environment and be able to interact with Bar members, volunteers, vendors, the public and Bar employees.

• Must work well under pressure, possess excellent organizational abilities, and be able to manage several priorities in a day.

• Must be adaptable, creative, and self-motivated.

• Ability to handle and maintain the confidentiality of highly sensitive information.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree.

• Project management experience.

• Demonstrated abilities in public speaking.

• Experience in coordinating staff teams to implement meetings and events.

This position is currently a hybrid position, with days worked in the office and days worked remotely. Managers determine what days are required to work in the office. The hybrid status of this position may change at any time subject to the Bar’s discretion.
