Coordinator for Mental Health and Counseling (K – 12)

District Wide

School Year 2024-2025

DEFINITION:

The Coordinator for Mental Health and Counseling shall be the employee member of the school staff designated by the Superintendent of Schools to oversee the district-wide counseling services, social-emotional curriculums and social-emotional programming.

GOAL:

Our goal is to provide individual, small group, classroom, and school wide social-emotional learning opportunities and services across the Woburn Public Schools that addresses the whole child. Using evidence-based approaches and collaboration with teachers, we aim to improve the social-emotional wellness of our students with the intent of improving their access to learning.

PREREQUISITE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  1. Minimum: A Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or an equivalent from an accredited institution, and/or commensurate experience
  2. Minimum: Massachusetts Educator Licensure as Supervisor/Director
  3. Minimum: Five (5) years’ experience as a school counselor or school psychologist.
  4. Preferred: Experience delivering services under the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) Model, Collaborative Classroom or Responsive Classroom.

As negotiated with and determined by the Superintendent of Schools

DUTIES:

  1. Supervise and evaluate staff as determined by the Assistant Superintendent for Student Services and building Principals
  2. Oversee and implement a comprehensive program of school counseling services, including delivery of curriculum aligned with DESE, ASCA and/or MASCA
  3. Oversee the coordination of counseling services for students, who might be experiencing difficulty with academic achievement
  4. Develop and submit to the Assistant Superintendent for Student Services all departmental budgets
  5. Approve the selection of all related instructional resources, equipment and materials for counseling services curriculum
  6. Work jointly with the administrative team to ensure that effective social emotional strategies for improving instruction and student outcomes are implemented that address the emotional of all children in WPS
  7. Supervise departmental staff; oversee the facilitation of departmental meetings and ensure that agendas and meeting minutes are available upon request
  8. Assist in the hiring of highly qualified counselors, social workers, school psychologists and therapeutic teachers, as appropriate.
  9. In conjunction with other Coordinators, ensure that the instructional program relates closely to current and sound practice
  10. Work with administration and staff to develop and implement tier 1, 2 and 3 interventions as part of the MTSS process
  11. Develop and recommend a plan for the integration of social emotional learning for grades K – 12, inclusive of specialized social/emotional programming.
  12. Oversee the implementation of referral processes for “at risk” student
  13. Ensure proper clinical supervision for WPS counselors and psychologists
  14. Assist in monitoring and planning for BARK and YRBS.
  15. Assist in managing district-wide social/emotional screenings
  16. Assist with 504 and IEP development as needed
  17. In collaboration with school and district administrators, oversee district-wide professional development programs
  18. Work closely with third-party mental and behavioral health support agencies and provide oversight of clinicians appointed in the WPS
  19. Establish effective channels of communication with outside agencies to support student and family social and emotional well-being
  20. Participate in the Mentoring and Induction programs for new staff members in collaboration with Principals, the Director of Human Resources, and Assistant Superintendents
  21. Perform other duties and tasks as assigned by Assistant Superintendent or Superintendent of Schools and/or Superintendent of Schools
