DEPARTMENT: Distribution Center
REPORTS TO: Transportation Manager
Job SummaryThis position will report to and work directly with the Transportation Manager and is responsible for the planning and scheduling of transportation services for all company shipments and related logistics processes. The position requires knowledge of shipment, load and transportation planning processes and systems (TMS), DOT regulations, freight tendering and spot rate negotiations for all modes (FTL, LTL, Parcel).
Duties And Responsibilities (essential Functions)Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
- Perform a wide range of tasks involving execution of transportation processes for truckload, LTL and parcel shipping.
- Review daily orders, routings and freight costs to plan the most efficient transportation mode and service level.
- Plan orders based on shipment characteristics (ship dates, backorder status, weight, cube, geography), secure capacity, negotiate spot rates where appropriate and plan shipments for warehouse pick operations.
- Liaison between Logistics and Customer Service departments to insure the highest service levels to our customers.
- Assists with the maintenance of freight contracts tariffs, rates and related charges agreed upon by the company.
- Maintains DOT files and responsible for federal/state record-keeping compliance.
- Acquire a working knowledge of JD Edwards Freight Routes/Rates ERP software.
- Assist in the vacation and absentee coverage of fellow department members, including functions outside of position duties.
- Generate routine and special request metric performance reports to management.
- Other duties assigned.
- Must be able to work in a fast paced, high volume environment, and have a strong attention to detail. Must be a proactive “self starter” who can work well with minimal supervision.
- Ability to read and speak the English language proficiently enough to communicate with co-workers, to understand and provide directions, to respond to management inquiries, and to make entries on reports and records.
- Ability to commit to company policies, principles, and processes.
- Minimum of 3 years in a Transportation Planning function utilizing a TMS system.
- 4 year undergraduate college degree preferred; Associated Degree and/or work experience in lieu of degree considered.
- Computer skills (Microsoft Office Applications, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and internet) required; advanced computer skills a plus. JD Edwards/ WMS/ ERP software experience preferred.
- Ability to prepare analysis, ad-hoc and software-generated reports.
- Excellent communication skills, adaptive to change, problem solving skills, bias for action and possess effective writing and speaking skills within teams and with carriers/customers.
- Statistical Analysis – experience in data analysis and statistics that will provide new insights into improved processes
- Attention to detail and organizational, planning skills are a must.
- To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform or be able to develop the skills and knowledge to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Direction is given by the Transportation Manager. Will interface with multiple levels of management depending on assigned facility. Will interface with all levels of personnel including production and other distribution team members. May interface with third party drivers or distribution channel personnel.

Physical RequirementsMust have ability to use hands and fingers to complete tasks quickly and efficiently. In addition, must have the ability to move freely throughout the facility without physical limitation, and capacity to sit or stand for long periods of time. Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs., and have the ability to bend, stoop and reach.
