Job DescriptionWe are seeking an experienced, highly motivated transportation professional to join our Risk Engineering team located at our Fishers, IN corporate office. The Risk Engineer is responsible for providing on site safety and service consultation to our prospective and active customers. The Risk Engineer serves as the “eyes and ears of the underwriting department” in an effort to reduce the total costs of loss for our customers. This is a highly visible position requiring travel. The ideal candidate will add to and bolster DMC’s unique culture – a workplace built on enthusiasm, entrepreneurship, integrity, communication, proactive problem solving, and a genuine passion for helping our customers and agents.
Primary Duties
  • Receive and complete risk engineering survey requests from the Underwriting Department for both prospective customers and current accounts for service work as assigned.
  • Gather and communicate pertinent safety information to assist in the risk selection part of the underwriting process.
  • Analyze loss data to look for trends that allow for a better understanding of the causes of loss, and supply insight and direction towards the improvement of customer base.
  • Assist customers with the development of loss prevention and/or safety programs. Monitor and measure the effectiveness of customer programs, corrective actions taken, and meetings held.
  • Develop service plans to actively engage accounts and assist in lowering their total cost of risk.
  • Draft professionally worded reports which include a detailed summary of the policyholder’s operation and safety management practices, as well as descriptions of the deficiencies and/or opportunities for risk improvement.
  • Develop meaningful recommendations and appropriate safety information to policyholders to assist in recommendation compliance and/or proactive safety training and education of their workers.
  • Actively monitor large losses and loss ratios on assigned accounts, develop and implement risk reduction strategies with specific customers.
  • Maintain a close relationship with internal departments, accounts and agents to ensure service meets expectations.
  • Identify, initiate, and successfully complete internal projects as assigned.
  • Assist in the execution of the company and department strategic plan with management as requested.
  • Travel to customer locations across the U.S. as needed for risk engineering services up to 50% -60% of time.
Education:
  • Minimum of a 4 year college degree
  • Insurance, safety and/or motor carrier transportation industry certifications such as Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Director of Safety (CDS) preferred.
Experience:
  • 5 years of transportation experience in operations, safety, maintenance, management, etc.
  • Previous commercial trucking insurance experience is a plus.
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:
  • General computer proficiency, to include Microsoft Office programs.
  • Ability to plan and work efficiently and effectively under limited supervision.
  • An excellent knowledge of safety regulations and recognized safe work practices.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of commercial trucking key loss control standards, guidelines, techniques and disciplines such as driver hiring, driver training and driver retention.
  • Considerable knowledge of, and the ability to apply, industry best practices related to, DOT compliance, CSA measures and FMCSA rules and regulations.
  • Ability to proactively identify risk factors for trucking companies and communicate risk concerns effectively to appropriate parties.
  • Ability to proactively analyze and evaluate risk factors by synthesizing data and communicating risk concerns effectively to appropriate parties.
  • Ability to mitigate risk and influence necessary change.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet necessary deadlines.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to provide customer service by responding appropriately to inquiries or concerns from agents, policyholders, regulatory agencies, management, and employees.
  • Effective presentation skills in a variety of settings.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working and client relationship.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, reports, and legal documents.
  • Ability to perform onsite training is a requirement.
