Dorchester County, SC is Hiring a MEDICAL BILLING CODER Near Summerville, SC

Description

The purpose of the class is to perform a variety of routine-to-moderately complex clerical work in the preparation and maintenance of department records; to perform a variety of clerical tasks as assigned; and to provide professional and courteous customer service at all times. The class prepares billing for medical services including diagnosis and procedure codes; creates/updates patient account information; posts payments; and follows-up on billing discrepancies and inquiries. The class is given a general outline of work to be performed and is free to develop work methods and sequences; work is reviewed periodically by supervisor.

Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Obtains patients’ insurance information from various sources; verifies insurance; and verifies
guarantor information.
  • Complete billings for ambulance trips; researches International Classification of Diseases (ICD)- 10 codes; makes sure the correct diagnosis is used for each transport billing; reviews the patient care report to add the correct call type (level of care for patient), Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes and correct modifiers.
  • Answer incoming calls; discusses accounts with patients, attorneys and insurance companies.
  • Assist with posting patient payments, insurance payments, and contractual allowances; sets-up payment plans for patients; files creditor claims to probate; records contractual write-offs; balances revenue; and completes deposit transmittals.
  • In the case of auto accidents and transport of Medicare patients, determines how many patients were transported in an ambulance, splits and calculates correct mileage charges, and obtains liability insurance and Medicare/Medicare supplement information.
  • Prepares, processes, copies, indexes, files, transmits and/or maintains various department
documents.
  • Ensures the security and confidentiality of files as appropriate.
  • Maintains records, prepare forms, verifies information and resolves moderately complex problems.
  • Types letters, memos, and other correspondence for the appropriate office or department.
  • Responsible for the hard copy or electronic filing system within the office in terms of categorizing,
classifying and organizing information and data.
  • Examines documents created by other administrative support staff for accuracy as assigned.
  • May collect fines, fees and payments; issues receipts.
  • May be required to purchase and maintain office inventory such as paper, pens, toner, etc.
  • May tabulate, post and verify information as requested.
  • May assist in departmental budgeting.
  • May answer telephone and direct visitors to the appropriate location.
  • Assists co-workers with clerical duties as necessary.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED.
Requires at least two (2) years of related work experience.
