Douglas County Government is Hiring a Laborer 1 - Fire & EMS - PT (Open Positions: 2) Near Douglas, GA

The responsibility of this position involves performing various duties in facility maintenance, ground maintenance, supply delivery, and other areas assigned within the Fire Department. The person (s) filling this position performs under the general supervision of the Deputy Chief. Employee must be able to perform independently and coordinate functions with Station Officers, department personnel, and other county departments.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Performing ground maintenance procedures including mowing, edging, raking at all fire stations and department facilities
  • General landscaping duties such as trimming shrubs, weeding flower beds, planting trees, bushes, or flowers
  • Operation of a large commercial mower
  • Driving and backing of large pickup truck with an 18-foot trailer
  • Operating various types of tools such as a chain saw
  • Maintaining accurate records of all inventory, equipment and repairs
  • Maintaining records as needed on all activities
  • Cleans work area, machines, tools and equipment
  • Successfully completing and maintaining all departmental and County training requirements
  • Performing other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. MINIMUM EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or General Educational Development Certificate (GED)
  • Experience in ground upkeep is preferred but not required
  • All certifications, skills and education will be considered
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office software suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) is preferred but not required

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must have no felony convictions within the past ten (10) years
  • Must have the ability to pass a physical examination

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license (Class C) a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR), and the ability and willingness to drive a county vehicle. Commercial Driver’s License preferred (Georgia Class B or equivalent)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of or ability to learn county and department operations, ordinances, policies, procedures, terminology, and materials as they relate to the assignment
  • Knowledge of ground maintenance procedures including mowing, edging, raking, and trimming
  • Knowledge of basic business mathematics: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary for the safe operation of equipment, tools, machinery, and vehicles as required by assignment
  • Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of department equipment, tools, machinery, and vehicles as required by assignment
  • Skill in handling and operating all assigned equipment, tools, and/or vehicles in a safe and proficient manner
  • Skill in performing tasks which require attention to detail, and completing assigned jobs efficiently and correctly
  • Ability to operate equipment used in grounds keeping work
  • Ability to apply common sense to understand, follow, and complete verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate and interact clearly and effectively with all those contacted in the course of work in a professional and courteous manner, both orally and in writing; establishing and maintaining effective, professional, and cordial working relationships
  • Ability to read and comprehend routine instructions, short correspondence and memos
  • Ability and willingness to meet physical requirements and perform manual labor (including lifting and carrying heavy objects) indoors or outdoors for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work in a team setting
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of specific instructions or direct supervision

Salary: $20.00 hourly, NO BENEFITS
