Douglas County is Hiring an Assistant planning Near Omaha, NE

The Position

Incumbent works under the direction of the Environmental Services Director or designee, supporting land use planning and zoning, building permits, and inspection services.

Essential Functions

  • Review building permit applications in adherence with established processes and procedures, coordinating with other jurisdictions.
  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with clients, supervisors, County employees, elected officials, attorneys, law enforcement, judges, other agencies, and the public.
  • Comply with Civil Service policies and regulations, collective bargaining agreements, County policies, department policies and laws to create a cooperative, safe, respectful, and quality work environment.
  • Forward building permit applications, plans, and documents to appropriate staff, consultants and other parties.
  • Track approvals, inspections, and project progress through final inspection and certificate of occupancy, ensuring required inspections are completed prior to building occupancy.
  • Prepare permit memos, notices, correspondence, and other materials.
  • Perform data entry maintaining project records and files.
  • Develop, organize, and maintain detailed files of building permit and inspection activity according to state law.
  • Assist customers routing to the appropriate staff.
  • Process purchase requisitions and perform accounts payable functions during absences.
  • Provide Smartgov support, assisting contractors and other users on permit issues.
  • Provide administrative support for land use planning and zoning functions (e.g. notifications / publication information, land use applicants, filing documents), the Planning Commission, and Zoning Board of Adjustment.
  • Maintain relevant webpage information.
  • Deposit cash / check receipts and reconcile / report on credit card payments, providing support for month end financials.
  • Coordinate permit status with outside offices.
  • Report to work with regular, consistent attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and directed.

Education and Work Experience and Other Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.*
  • One (1) year of clerical experience required.*
  • One (1) year of MSOffice required.
  • Completion of a pre-employment criminal record check and conditional offer drug screen required.
  • Equivalent combination of education and work experience may be substituted for requirements on a year-for-year basis.

Work is generally performed in an office setting. Noise level is usually moderate. Work hours are typically standard day-shift hours;

Work requires some physical activity, including extended periods of sitting, standing, frequent walking, reaching, and occasional balancing, kneeling, bending.

Work also requires the ability to frequently lift / carry objects weighing up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 25 pounds.

Required sensory abilities include vision, hearing, and touch. Visual abilities, correctable to normal ranges, include close, distance and color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Communication abilities include the ability to talk and hear within normal ranges. Incumbent must possess the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computers and other equipment.
