  • Holds a valid Principal Certificate or Certificate of Eligibility.
  • Has a minimum of three (3) years experience as a school or district level administrator working with preschool students.
  • Preferred experience and knowledge in Special Education and/or Literacy background.
  • Possesses a valid driver’s license as well as current insurance and vehicle with valid registration.
  • Has a desire to grow professionally and seek out new opportunities to learn.
  • Ability to effectively analyze data to evaluate programs.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Has an ability to work independently and manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
  • Has a strong working knowledge of technology and the ability to use electronic equipment for word processing, data management, information retrieval, visual and audio presentations and telecommunications.
  • Required criminal history background check, physical and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident status.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
JOB GOAL: The Director of Preschool Education shall ensure the coordination of all the elements of a high-quality preschool program within the school district, including all private providers and local Head Start agencies.Performance DutiesThe responsibilities of the Director of Preschool Education shall include, but not limited to executing the following:
  • Manage the development and implementation of the preschool budget, five-year preschool plan and/or annual update and professional development plans as required by the New Jersey Department of Education.
  • Ensure compliance with all State and Federal mandates as they pertain to the preschool program and funding (i.e., maintain records, submit reports and complete applications).
  • Supervise registration, recruitment and outreach efforts.
  • Supervise and evaluate instructional and non-instructional staff involved in the preschool program as per AchieveNJ and Board Policy.
  • Ensure that each private provider and local Head Start agency implements a system for classroom teacher observations.
  • Oversee contractual compliance with private providers and local Head Start agencies.
  • Coordinate the daily instructional schedules for staff members (master schedule development).
  • Meet regularly with building administrators, private providers, including local Head Start agencies, to foster collaboration and program implementation including, but not limited to, fiscal and curriculum information.
  • Provide systematic and adequate program oversight for district-based and community-based providers of preschool programs.
  • Work with center directors and district staff to evaluate programs and practices.
  • Work with center directors and district staff to ensure that curriculum is aligned to Preschool Teaching and Learning Standards and is articulated and implemented between preschool and kindergarten programs to ensure a seamless transition to kindergarten.
  • Provide assistance to all staff responsible for the implementation of appropriate early childhood practices within the preschool program.
  • Coordinate and oversee the activities of the Master Teacher
  • Administer strategies designed to help teachers and other professionals optimize children’s learning and development in all domains.
  • Coordinate annual program evaluation.
  • Arrange in-service training for early childhood education providers and teachers.
  • Provide parental support, training and orientations.
  • Assist in developing and leading strategic partnerships with key community and philanthropic partners to improve resource options for the district’s preschool program.
  • Ensure Preschool Teaching and Learning Standards guide program delivery and instruction.
  • Effectively collaborate with the Director of Special Services to ensure coordination of services leading to maximized rates of inclusion of preschool-aged children in general education settings (i.e., Least Restrictive) and ensure compliance with students’ IEPs.
  • Develop an articulation process which extends the early childhood experiences into the elementary school program.
  • Summarize, interpret, and disseminate current developments in instruction, learning theory and cognitive research through reading of professional journals, participation in professional development, and involvement in professional organizations.
  • Perform such other tasks and assumes such other duties as may be assigned by the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee.
