Scope of Responsibilities:

The Assistant Director for Programming and Student Engagement in the Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity in consultation and collaboration with the Director, the CSGD Assistant Director for Training and Student Development, and Staff Specialist works to fulfill the mission of the CSGD in “…striving to achieve an inclusive campus climate for students, staff, faculty, and alumni with marginalized sexual and romantic orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions through education, advocacy, support, mentoring, academic engagement, and providing space.” The Assistant Director for Programming and Student Engagement in collaboration with the CGSD team designs, implements and facilitates programming for the Duke Community. The Assistant Director for Programming and Student Engagement facilitates the co-supervision model of the undergraduate and graduate student staff members and supports and liaises with graduate and professional LGBTQIA student organizations. The Assistant Director for Programming and Student Engagement work specializes providing programmatic support for both Graduate and Professional and Undergraduate Student Programming Assistants of the CSGD. The Assistant Director for Programming and Student Engagement conducts assessment for the department as related to programs of the CSGD. The Assistant Director for Programming and Student Engagement alongside the CSGD Assistant Director for Training and Student Development manages the operations of the CSGD in the absence of the Director, builds and cultivates a sense of civic engagement and philanthropy with departments and organizations across the University and in the local Durham community.

Duties:

Design, implement and coordinate dynamic programming (guided by an understanding of social justice frameworks, intersectionality, and the experiences of those with multiple marginalized identities) for members of the Duke community with marginalized sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions, and for those who identify as allies. Provide supervision and guidance to student staff members in the facilitation of student-led programming efforts for the Duke community. Collaborate regularly with student organizations, identity and cultural centers, university departments and with organizations in the local Durham community. Foster academic engagement through programming in partnership with academic units across campus. Serve as the primary point person for key programs including our LGBTQIA History Month and National Coming Out Day Celebration, PRIDE: Durham, NC Partnership, Kickback Fridays, In-Group Spaces, Identity Recognition Events, Lavender Graduation, etc. Evaluate and assesses CSGD programs and their effectiveness through regular qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis in collaboration with the Student Affairs Office of Assessment.

Supervise the CSGD Graduate and Professional Student Programming Assistants and Undergraduate Student Programming Assistants. Coordinate the co-supervision model of all undergraduate Student Programming Assistants and Graduate and Professional Student Assistants including recruitment, hiring, training, and evaluation.

Design and disseminate marketing materials for programs and events, create semesterly calendars, and the CSGD Weekly e-newsletter. Manage/moderate CSGD listservs. Manage CSGD social media.

Support all CSGD trainings, events, in-group spaces, and provide mentorship for student-led programs and initiatives. Serve as an advisor to Undergraduate student groups such as Blue Devils United, Marsha’s Home, and Athlete Ally.

Work with the Director to oversee the budget and participate in budget planning and development especially as it pertains to programming efforts. Assist the Director in the writing of annual reports and accreditation reports.

Plan and market faculty and staff socials for each semester. Coordinate with Faculty/Staff LGBTQIA affinity groups.

Cultivate and maintain relationships with other identity/cultural centers within the Division of Student Affairs, identity/cultural student organizations, alumni organizations and organizations that support the mission of the CSGD within the Duke University community and beyond.

Manage the Center’s daily operations and oversee programming and administrative tasks in the Director's absence.

Serve as a liaison to graduate and professional LGBTQIA student organizations, assist with the coordination of their programming efforts, and encourage involvement through orientation resource fairs.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires analytical, communications and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Work generally requires two years experience in personnel, college or OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE university administration, or a related field to acquire skills necessary to provide program management, advising and general administrative support.
