The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the Edmund T. Pratt School of Engineering is accepting applications for a full-time Research and Development Engineer II who will be responsible for oversight of our teaching and research laboratories. The position requires an undergraduate degree in engineering or engineering technology, with laboratory and/or testing experience preferred. We are seeking a self-motivated team player who can learn and work independently. Job responsibilities will be to perform a variety of technical duties involved in conducting undergraduate labs and assisting faculty in setting-up experiments. Specific duties will involve maintenance and operation of testing equipment for undergraduate labs and contribution to the planning, design, construction, and modification of experimental hardware for teaching and research labs. For undergraduate labs, the research and development engineer will set-up and conduct experiments for courses in Solid Mechanics, Dynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Soil Mechanics, Concrete Design and Steel Design. These labs include experiments such as tensile and compaction, concrete cylinder, and torsional testing of metals, buckling, triaxial soil testing, beam testing, wind tunnel measurements of lift and drag, measurement of conductive and convective heat transfer, measurement of dynamic systems, etc. Many of these labs involve computer-controlled testing machines and digital data acquisition. Routine maintenance of this equipment is an important job.The research and development engineer will ensure compliance with safety requirements applicable to the operation of the labs.
SummaryProvide professional engineering services by performing a variety of technical duties involved in procuring, assembling, operating, and maintaining equipment for testing related to civil and environmental engineering fields in support of teaching and research activities. Supervise and guide student execution of laboratory testing. Explain engineering concepts demons trated by the laboratory experiments. Train teaching assistants to properly supervise and guide execution of laboratory testing. Maintain and over see a variety of teaching laboratories.
WORK PERFORMED
  • Manage teaching labs in the areas of structural engineering, solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, soil mechanics, environmental engineering, and computer-based design.
  • Schedule and supervise routine maintenance on equipment; troubleshootproblems and perform repair work as needed.
  • Replenish supplies and maintain orderly and clean labs.
  • Be observant in how spaces are utilized by students and faculty and make recommendations to continually improving these spaces.
  • Provide engineering assistance, instruction and consultation to faculty and student researchers and to staff members in procuring, assembling, operating, and maintaining engineering and science related equipment for teaching and research activities; operate and demonstrate techniques for operating specialized equipment including, but not limited to hydraulic and electric load frames, electric welder, concrete mixer, soil and aggregate sieves, fluid mechanics benches, and autoclave.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable safety requirements.
  • Maintain technical files and operating manuals .
  • Procure equipment and supplies; process and maintain records of expenditures.
  • Perform other related duties as needed incidental to the work described herein.

Minimum QualificationsEducation
Work requires a thorough knowledge of the principles of engineering and related natural sciences acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree program in an Engineering science or a related natural science such as Physics or Chemistry. Due to professional exemption, equivalent experience cannot be substituted for bachelor's degree.
ExperienceWork requires two years of related experience sufficient to acquire OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE. competency in the application of knowledge in the related Engineering field. A master's degree in an Engineering science or a related natural science may offset the required experience.
