As a Duke Regional Hospital employee located at our Lincoln Community Health Center Pharmacy location, you will be a part of an award winning team in work culture and teamwork. The Inventory Management Technician’s primary role is to procure and manage pharmacy medications and other pharmacy products. Additional responsibilities include managing drug recalls, drug shortages, pharmaceutical supply chain disturbances, and prescription workflow in department.

 The Inventory Management Technician must be able to balance efficiency with accuracy, work both independently and as a team in a fast-paced environment.

Work Location: Duke Regional Hospital location at Lincoln Community Health Center – Durham, NC

Working hours: 

  • Day shift rotating 8:00am-5:00pm and 9:00am - 6:00pm Monday-Friday; except occasional 11:00am - 8:00pm on Tuesdays

General Description of the Job Class

The duties and responsibilities of the Inventory Management Technician includes but are not limited to the following:

  • Manage all aspects of drug ordering including special orders from pharmaceutical wholesaler to ensure medication and supply availability.
  • Manage receipt of drug order, reconcile invoice with shipment, review for pricing excursions, shelve drugs following department safety guidelines, restock/rotate inventory stock, and remove expired medications.
  • Manage receipt of PAP medications, notify PAP Coordinator upon arrival, update computer inventory, and assist PAP Coordinator with filling medications.
  • Manage drug records in pharmacy management system. This includes
    • create new drug records,
    • manage active/inactive drug records,
    • manage drug inventory details, and
    • maintain drug pricing information and updates in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with wholesaler to address drug-ordering issues.
  • Identify and analyze drug shortages and collaborate with pharmacy leadership on risk mitigation and alternative strategies.
  • Process drugs to return to wholesaler.
  • Collate all drug recall alerts, identify possible impact, remove recalled medications and return as directed, collaborate with clinic and pharmacy to address recalls and alternative strategies.
  • Handle drugs for destruction including:
    • remove expired/recalled medications from dispensing area and segregate in appropriate destruction drawer/bin,
    • remove inventory from pharmacy management system,
    • maintain tracking log of drugs removed from stock, and
    • collaborate with Reverse Distributor to obtain inventory credit and reconcile returned medications using reverse distribution computer portal.
  • Order and distribute clinic floor stock and vaccines; additionally provide invoices for clinic billing.
  • Process prescriptions for medications out of stock.
  • Replenish drug robotic cabinet.
  • Remove and dispose shipping packaging.
  • Respond to medication sourcing and pricing information requests.
  • Serve as primary contact and liaison with wholesaler and reverse distributor.
  • Perform and reconcile 340B inventory audits to monitor for inventory accuracy and diversion.
  • Oversee annual inventory count and provide documentation to support variances.
  • Create and collate Pharmacy and Therapeutic reports.
  • Generate reports and support department documentation for cost savings and drug expenditures. Evaluate and track cost saving opportunities.
  • Oversee direct orders of pharmacy supplies including vials/caps, labels, bags, and office supplies and ensuring timely ordering.
  • Support pharmacy compliance with Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA)
  • Maintain consistent communication with Pharmacy leadership regarding inventory issues and drug cost variances.
  • Support prescription workflow in department.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent and completion of an accredited pharmacy technician-training program.

or

  • Acceptance into pharmacy school.

or

  • High school diploma or equivalent and one year of pharmacy or health care related experience.
  • College course work in business/management, position specific advanced coursework, and/or an equivalent combination is preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum of two years of pharmacy technician experience is required.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:

  • North Carolina Board of Pharmacy registration is required.
  • Pharmacy Technician certification is required from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or The Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of drug names, medical terminology and pharmaceutical calculations.
  • Proficient computer skills including Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Requires critical thinking skills with ability to implement solutions.
  • Excellent customer service skills including prioritizing the needs of patients and multidisciplinary team members while displaying empathy in all interactions to ensure complete satisfaction.
  • Strong organizational skills including staying focused on assigned task and using time and resources effectively and efficiently to achieve job expectations.
  • Typical physical demands include ability to perform the job while standing, reaching, stretching, stooping, and sitting for prolonged times; manual dexterity sufficient to perform computer, dispensing functions of the job; ability to lift up to 20 lbs., while walking, stooping, bending and reaching.
