The Administrative Coordinator for the Duquesne University COM will support the development and implementation of a high school pipeline program to support local students from impoverished neighborhoods demonstrating an interest and aptitude in STEM toward a healthcare career. The coordinator will support the design of the summer program and the tutoring program and will work cooperatively with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the Director of Student Affairs, high school teachers and administrators, participating students and their caregivers, and others as needed. The position will have significant interaction with both students and faculty.
This position is needed to support the “Paving a Path to Medicine” project funded by a Richard King Mellon Foundation Grant in the School of Medicine for the period 10/31/2023 through 10/31/2024. This position is specifically funded by the grant.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Finalize the plan for near-peer STEM tutoring for participants, including solicitation, selection, and training of Duquesne University or neighboring university students who have demonstrated expertise in STEM coursework, and work with school officials and participant caregivers to ensure participants’ good attendance, appropriate behavior in and out of school, and continued engagement in the program.
Finalize the design and curriculum of the on-campus summer experience including the purchase of supplies and identification of instructors to carry out the program.
Assist in the creation of a process for the selection of interested students including an application, interview, and permission from caregivers and actively participate in the selection of this year’s cohort of student participants.
Identify school systems in Allegheny County, PA that serve low-income, impoverished, or underserved communities and establish relationships with school administrators and guidance counselors.
Complete all training and certifications required by Pennsylvania law to work with minors including training to drive a University vehicle.
Participate in the preparation and submission of additional grants to funding agencies to extend and expand this program.
Collect and analyze data and participate in outcomes reporting to the granting agency.
Travel required for this position.
Completes other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and 1-3 years work related experience.
Current PA Driver’s License
Preferred qualifications:
Bachelor’s in a life science or STEM-related field preferred.
Alternately, the successful candidate may possess any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essential job functions. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:
Demonstrated interest or prior experience working with underprivileged students who would benefit from opportunities to pursue a career in the healthcare field
Willingness and ability to utilize new technologies relevant to the position
Knowledge of, or the ability to learn internal University systems
Experience and training in a higher education environment, with knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential job functions. This includes but is not limited to demonstrated proficiency with current Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Publisher as well as Outlook e-mail
Must be mobile and have the ability to lift up to 25 pounds
