POSITIONSUMMARY:

This is an Associate Director position in the Carl G. Grefenstette Centerfor Ethics in Science, Technology, and Law at Duquesne University. Thisposition will report to the Executive Director (ED). This is a full time,2-year position that is funded by a newly received grant from the HillmanFoundation. This is a hybrid position, with occasional travel to Duquesnerequired.

The Associate Director will workclosely with the ED in the main purposes of the center, which involve grantwriting, teaching, event coordination, and conducting research. The AssociateDirector will teach between one and two classes each semester related todigital ethics and/or policy. They will work with the ED to seek after andapply for federal and private grants. They will also assist the ED inorganizing the annual Fall Tech Ethics Symposium, the Spring Hacking4Humanity,and regular lectures and public discussions. Finally, the AD will be expectedto continue in their own research related to AI ethics, tech ethics moregenerally, tech policy, social studies of technology, studies of technology andsociety, the intersection of humanities with science and technology, or a relatedfield.

The Grefenstette Center relies upon teamwork,problem solving, and bringing to life a vision of the center that does notcurrently exist. This position requires someone who is willing to constructsomething new and work closely with the other team members to make this happen.Skills required include teamwork, adaptability, communication, initiative,humility, and creativity. This is a grant-funded, 2 yearposition with the possibility of renewal that is dependent upon the receptionof future grants.

DUTIESAND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaches betweenone and two courses each semester for undergraduate or graduate students on AIethics, data ethics, tech policy, or a related field.

Assists in seeking out grants andwriting grant applications for federal organizations and private foundations.

Assists in organizing andcoordinating events, lectures, and public discussions on campus.

Continues their own researchrelated to technology ethics, policy, or a related field.

Travel to Duquesne University required5 % of time, may live either in Pittsburgh region or elsewhere.

Completes otherduties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum qualifications:

Doctoral degree from an accredited institution and 1-3 years of experience. A Juris Doctor degree may also beaccepted if enough of a research background is demonstrated.

The candidate has appliedfor grants in the past.

The candidate has a demonstrated track record of universityteaching with classes related to technology ethics or policy, or theintersection of religious thought, technology, and science.

The candidate has the capability and desire to hostcompelling public events.

The candidate has promising research related to technologyethics, tech studies, or tech policy.

Current valid driver’s license.

Preferred qualifications:

Doctoral degree in Scienceand Technology Studies, Computer Science Ethics, Theological Studies orReligious Studies preferred.

The candidate has successfully received federal and privategrants in the past, especially those related to intersections of technology,science, and ethics.

The candidate has an excellent teaching record ofundergraduate or graduate teaching on topics related to tech ethics, techpolicy, or the relationship between technology and religion.

The candidate has a demonstrated record of hosting andorganizing compelling public events.

The candidate has a proven track record of first-rateresearch in technology ethics, technology studies, technology policy, or therelationship between religion and technology.

Alternately, the successful candidatemay possess any equivalent combination of experience and training, whichprovides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essentialjob functions. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:
