JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Heavy Equipment Operator

Reports to: Project Supervisor

Summary of Responsibilities:

The Heavy Equipment Operatoris responsible for operating heavy equipment in a safe, appropriate, efficient and productive manner. Heavy equipment may include trucks, front-end loaders, excavators, dozers, graders, compactors, skid steers and other pieces of equipment. The Operator must also inspect, clean, maintain and secure all assigned equipment.

The Take Charge OPERATOR:

Ensures quality at a productive rate on each project

  • Operates heavy equipment in an safe, efficient and productive manner to ensure project goals are met
  • Operates various pieces of equipment during the execution of heavy construction, including trucks, front-end loaders, excavators, dozers, graders, compactors, and skid steers
  • Performs various project-specific tasks daily including excavating, back-filling, grading, fine grading, sloping, benching, material loading, demolishing, ditching, and stockpiling
  • Achieves proper excavation depths and dimensions for earthwork and utilities as specified by construction drawings, sketches, grade markers, and/or verbal instructions
  • Performs backfilling and grading operations to specified grades and dimensions
  • Properly loads, in a safe and balanced manner, flatbed trucks, dump trucks, and other hauling units with excavated soils, dredging ponds, demolition debris and other building materials such as stone, sand, aggregate or asphalt
  • Performs all duties as requested daily, including operating various pieces of equipment and other typical construction site activities

Maintains equipment and tools to ensure long lasting use

  • Performs preventative maintenance such as general equipment cleaning, checking fluid levels, lubrication, maintaining tire pressure, and changing implements or attachments
  • Maintains clean equipment, removing trash, debris, and other material in or on equipment daily
  • Performs equipment inspections daily and properly completes equipment inspection reports
  • Performs other jobsite cleanup duties as assigned by supervisor, specifically cleanup and organization that is required to be completed with the use of heavy equipment

  • Complies with all safety requirements, including Durr, OSHA and other applicable safety standards to minimize the risk of injury, property damage, or loss of life
  • Follows proper protocols and instructions to ensure the safe operation of equipment including the use of verbal communication, hand signals, spotters, and flaggers
  • Always wears approved safety equipment (PPE) including, hardhat, work boots, safety glasses and a secured seat belt when operating equipment
  • Observes and examines colored flags and ground markings indicating the location of underground utilities and structures identifying potential hazards and ensuring that they are properly marked and secured
  • Be actively engaged on your project
  • Be a MENTOR – educate and provide guidance for those under your supervision. We are counting on you to TAKE CHARGE and ensure a safe jobsite for all our employees.
  • Be actively engaged in all safety meetings
  • Do the little things right… set the tone for acceptable behaviors and let your crew see you do it. Hold them to the same standards. Housekeeping and organization is a great start. Your crew will execute according to your expectations – and our standards are high.
  • Recognize and identify hazards in upcoming work and pro-actively engage with the project manager and safety manager to mitigate any upcoming risks
  • Remove employees that refuse to work safely
  • Be knowledgeable regarding DURR’s safety requirements… it is difficult to enforce something if you do not understand it. Familiarize yourself with our Safety Manual.
  • REPORT ALL SAFETY INCIDENTS AND NEAR MISSES IMMEDIATELY

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Expert knowledge of light and heavy equipment operation and maintenance
  • A working knowledge of heavy construction and the various techniques used to complete underground utilities, concrete paving, earthwork, and demolition work
  • Ability to operate wheel or crawler type backhoe, large and small tractors, skid steer loader, trencher, grader blade, dump truck, pickup truck, hand, and portable and small tools
  • Knowledge of basic equipment and vehicle inspection and maintenance
  • Knowledge of construction safety standards and precautions
  • Maintain appropriate licenses for machinery and equipment operating
  • Hand, eye, and foot coordination
  • Understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions
  • Meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency

Education and/or Experience:

Minimum 3 to 5years experience involving the use of medium to heavy equipment.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items over 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. This position is performed in outside weather conditions.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $24.00 - $26.00 per hour

Expected hours: No more than 45 per week
