Upper School Head of Individuals and Societies and DP Global Politics Teacher

Hours: 7:30am-4pm

Position Overview

Dwight School, a Pre-K-12 coeducational school on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, is seeking an experienced Head of Upper School Individuals & Societies and IB DP Global Politics teacher for the 2024-2025 academic year. Candidates will be considered for both roles. The ideal candidate would be an experienced and innovative teacher and leader with a successful track record in teaching social science courses.

Responsibilities

Head of Individuals and Societies (I&S)

• Leading a team of dedicated I&S teachers
• Delivering innovative teaching strategies which engage, support, and develop student success in our I&S courses in the IB Middle Years (MYP) and Diploma (DP) Programs, as well as our Dwight Courses program.
• Fostering excellence in learning, curriculum, and pedagogy throughout the department
• Guide department members with the appropriate inclusion of 21st Century skills and innovative use of technology to enhance delivery of curriculum
• Work closely with administration to oversee the recruiting, hiring, observation, and supervision of faculty within the department
• Support teachers in fostering a positive and constructive learning environment
• Expand opportunities for external opportunities for social studies learning, via field trips, contests, and speakers
• Display a commitment to diversity and creating a culture of equity, inclusion, and belonging in approach to teaching and learning, as they are recognized and valued by Dwight

DP Global Politics Teacher

• Teach Grade 11 and/or Grade 12 DP Global Politics in our upper school
• Collaborate closely with other Dwight colleagues concerning the development of curriculum, academic scope and sequence, student wellness and growth, and professional development to yield a positive and healthy school environment
• Intentionally construct and develop an interactive classroom environment for students to grow in the Diploma Program
• Develop and foster students’ skill progression throughout the program through differentiated instruction, based on the department’s internal scope and sequence
• Teach critical thinking and analysis, while delivering an excellent social studies curriculum rooted in inquiry-based learning
• Form relationships with students in an effort to foster personal academic growth within each pupil

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Education, social sciences or related field is required
• At least 3 years of experience teaching
• Department leadership experience is a plus
• Experience teaching IB DP Global Politics highly preferred
• Experience teaching to a range of learners
• Eagerness to contribute positively to the Dwight community
• Willingness to engage with and learn from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences
• Ability to bring joy, kindness, maturity, and flexibility to the school environment

Compensation commensurate upon experience: $80,000-$100,000
