THE OPPORTUNITY:
The Park District is currently recruiting to fill seven (7) Public Safety Student Aide vacancies. These vacancies are headquartered at the Park District's Public Safety HQ located in Castro Valley, CA. The hiring pools established from this recruitment will be used to fill the current vacancies and additional vacancies that may occur during the one-year life of the hiring pools. Assignments are part-time and limited to 999 hours per fiscal year (July 1 through June 30).
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:
Public Safety Student Aides perform a variety of primarily entry-level and clerical tasks while assigned in one of the following areas of the Public Safety Department: Administrative Division, Communications/Records, Detective Unit, Fire Department, Personnel and Training Unit, Property and Evidence Unit, Patrol Operations, Special Enforcement Unit, or the Volunteer Trail Safety Program. Aides are generally assigned to an individual department or unit and rotate positions annually or based on departmental needs.

Essential Functions

  • Answers phones and provides information; issues supplies and equipment
  • Files a variety of documents and assists with data entry
  • Assists with police or fire training exercises
  • Provides civilian assistance to police and fire personnel
  • Sets up training reservations and prepares travel documents
  • Catalogues, processes, and picks up evidence
  • Serves as an escort within Public Safety locations to individuals without clearance
  • Transports equipment to and from deployment points
  • Secures Park entrances after closing
  • When assigned to the patrol division directs traffic, assigns parking, or performs other non-enforcement activities for Park District holidays or special events
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Completion of high school or equivalent GED or CHSPE certificate. Must be enrolled in a minimum of nine college-level units and have a 2.00 cumulative grade point average or higher to apply for and to retain position.
Experience: None.
License or Certificate: Possession of a valid California Driver's License is a condition of initial and continued employment in this classification.
Additional Information
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of: office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
Ability to: perform basic clerical skills such as typing, filing, and completing simple mathematical computations; learn law enforcement practices and procedures; effectively follow oral and written instructions and adhere to Departmental policies; work independently; operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain positive and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work at all levels, including a culturally diverse general public, with a focus on quality service to internal staff and external customers.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • All East Bay Park Regional District employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of employment.
  • Pre-employment Background Check : Due to its placement in the Public Safety Division, the candidate(s) selected for this position will undergo a Level 3 background investigation which consists of an employment history verification, employee reference check, education or certificate verification, Department of Justice fingerprinting, and criminal history review. Background investigators will contact references, friends, family, former and current employers and other contacts in order to verify information provided by the candidate in a Personal History Statement. In addition, investigators will perform a criminal records check, driving record check and credit check. Candidates will also undergo a medical examination, including a drug-screening test. Information revealed during the background investigation may be grounds for rejection during the selection process.
  • Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License is a condition of initial and continued employment.
  • This position is designated as a Mandated Reporter under the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA). Mandated reporters are individuals who are obligated by law to report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect. As such, you will be required to sign an acknowledgment of having received the District's policy and your responsibilities.
  • Required to wear a Park District uniform and adhere to Department grooming standards. Aides will be issued an annual uniform allowance to assist in cleaning of issued uniforms. May be required to work unusual hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • The Public Safety Student Aide position exists to provide exposure for students considering a career in public safety. Assignments are terminated when the student completes their educational program or at four years, whichever occurs first. An extension of up to one year may be granted by the Assistant General Manager of Public Safety.
