Overview
Led by East Carolina University, the Coastal Studies Institute is a multi-institutional research and educational partnership of the UNC System including North Carolina State University, UNC Chapel Hill, UNC Wilmington, and Elizabeth City State University.
The Coastal Studies Institute, located on the ECU Outer Banks Campus, focuses on integrated coastal research and education programming centered around the needs, issues, and concerns of coastal North Carolinians by bringing together the interdisciplinary teams.
Specific research expertise of CSI spans a variety of coastal disciplines including coastal dynamics, ecology, biology, economics, environmental geography, social and behavioral sciences, and engineering.
CSI uses an interdisciplinary approach and scientific advances to provide effective solutions to complex problems while helping coastal communities, ecosystems, and economies thrive. Job Duties 45% Knowledge :
ꞏ Implement the Jennette’s Pier Wave Energy Center environmental monitoring
program.
ꞏ Contribute to the establishment and implementation of environmental monitoring
protocols.
ꞏ Stay informed of the state-of-the-art, including technical standards, in
environmental monitoring through literature review and participation in relevant
workshops and conferences.
ꞏ Coordinate with AMEC partners on standard procedures for environmental
monitoring documentation to support accreditation and safe deployments and
recovery of marine energy devices.
45% Technical :
ꞏ Maintain and update permits to operate the Jennette’s Pier Wave Energy Test
Center.
ꞏ Coordinate with regulatory agencies and local stakeholders on testing
ꞏ Perform regular data quality control and analysis.
ꞏ Prepare technical reports and presentations for clients who test devices at the
Jennette’s Pier Wave Energy Test Center and other stakeholders.
10% Communication :
ꞏ Communicate environmental monitoring efforts to interested stakeholders, including
researchers and regulatory agencies.
ꞏ Work with Jennette’s Pier and Coastal Studies Institute education and outreach
staff to develop programs and displays to share findings and methods with the public
and students.
ꞏ Maintain communication with the NCROEP, CSI, AMEC Leadership and partner
universities.
Minimum Education / Experience Bachelor’s degree in an agriculture, biological, engineering, environmental, natural resources sciences or related discipline and one year of experience that demonstrates possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work;
or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
License or Certification required by statute or regulation None Preferred Experience, Skills, Training / Education Experience with the collection analysis of water, air, and biomass samples using established laboratory protocols.
