EAST PROVIDENCE SCHOOL DEPARTMENTPrincipal - Middle School Job DescriptionClass Title: Principal Middle SchoolDepartment: SchoolClassification: Administrator 12 monthsImmediate Supervisor: Superintendent and/or Assistant SuperintendentCLASS DESCRIPTION: Under the direction of the Superintendent and or the Assistant Superintendent, the Middle School Principal serves as the educational leader and chief administrator of the middle school. The Principal is responsible for setting the vision for achieving and sustaining high levels of student achievement and strategically implementing the school districts mission and carrying out the policies established by the School Committee through effective leadership of all stakeholders. The Principal works collaboratively to lead and nurture all members of the school staff and to communicate effectively with students, parents, members of the community, and colleagues in other school districts. The Principal oversees all aspects of the instructional program, school environment, and the operational/fiscal health of the school.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Serves as the instructional leader of the building staff and articulates a clear and compelling vision founded in strong and sustainable student achievement outcomes.
Serves as a role model and displays the highest ethical, and professional behavior and standards when working with district personnel, students, parents, the community, and agencies associated with the school.Works closely and communicates regularly with the Superintendent and/or Assistant Superintendent and keeps them informed of all practices, policies, issues, curriculum development, innovations, successes, and general operation of the school.Organizes, manages, evaluates, and supervises effective and clear procedures of the operation and functioning of the school consistent with the philosophy, mission, values and goals of the school district, including instructional programs, extracurricular activities, discipline systems to ensure a safe and orderly environment, financial management, facilities maintenance, program evaluation, personnel management, office operations, emergency procedures, and community relations.Manages personnel effectively through appropriate delegations, planning and evaluations.Foster an environment where staff and faculty work cooperatively together and hold each other accountable to reach high levels of student achievement. Develops and recommends the master schedule for instructional programs ensuring sequential learning experiences for students that meet and exceed the Common Core State Standards. Maintains positive, cooperative, and mutually supportive relationships with Central Administration, Directors and Associate Directors on all curricular matters, practices, policies and procedures applicable to assigned school.Ensures that personnel and student record keeping procedures comply with state and federal laws, and district policy. Implement procedures for safe storing and integrity of all public and confidential and school records.Organizes and supervises procedures for identifying and addressing special needs of students including health related concerns, physical, emotional and learning disabilities, and coordinating the resources of the school and community to assist the student and family.Organizes and nurtures an effective leadership team of assistants and supervisors with clear expectations for role, responsibilities, and performance, holding each individual accountable for area of assignment.Works collaboratively with teachers to collect and analyze data regarding the needs and achievement of students, including state assessments and other pertinent information affecting the design and implementation of services and programs, using the information to recommend new programs and modifications to existing programs.Effectively and fairly evaluates teachers classroom management, instructional practice, professional development, interpersonal and leadership skills, while identifying high and low effectiveness performers, providing clear and actionable feedback, resources and support.Develops, manages, and monitors school budget resources (fiscal, human capital, facilities, equipment, inventory, etc.) and submit appropriate budget plans and purchase requisitions to Central Administration in accordance with the districts policies and procedures.Holds regular staff meetings and serve, as appropriate, on staff committees.Ensures compliance with all state and federal laws, Administrative and School Committee policies and regulations, including Affirmative Action mandates.Develops comprehensive extracurricular programs that enlist the support and enthusiasm of both students and teachers.Leads the School Improvement Team in the development, implementation and evaluation of the School Improvement Plan.
Keep the staff informed and seek ideas for the improvement of the school and conduct meetings as necessary.Summarizes, interprets, and disseminates to staff current developments in learning theory professional journals, collaboration with colleagues, participation in professional development, and involvement in professional organizations.Develops a program to foster positive public relations for the school that consistently celebrates and informs parent and the community of student and staff accomplishments. The information provided should solicit community and parental support and understanding of the programs and services of the school.Confers with parents and staff to discuss educational activities, policies, and student behavioral and/or learning problems.Maintains effective communications with agencies and resources outside of the school.Supervises the production and dissemination of all school publications.Ensures the cleanliness, security and overall efficient operation of the school.Performs all other related duties and tasks as assigned by the Superintendent.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Working knowledge of district and school rules, regulations, and policies applicable to area of assignment.Ability to work effectively with district personnel, administrators, staff, parents, outside agencies, other school districts, and the communityAbility and experience with proven management and team building skills.Strong record of helping students achieve and sustain academic success.Skills in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership techniques and coordination of people and resources.Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching, and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.Keen ability to use data in the decision making process and strong analytical and problem-solving skills.Ability to continuously elevate professional contributions through ongoing reflections, building upon previous learning, and being open and receptive to ongoing feedback.Ability to communicate and understand information and ideas effectively verbally and in writing.Ability to learn and proficiently use various school-related systems and databases.Ability to handle difficult in-person situations and telephone inquiries which require courtesy, tact, and professionalism.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and ExperienceMasters Degree from a regionally accredited institution required.Must possess a valid Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) Building Level Administrator Certification Kindergarten-Grade 12.Must have five (5) years Administrative experience and five (5) years of teaching experience.Record of success in leading adults, labor relations and supervisory experience required. Must have active listening and decision-making skills.Must be highly motivated and enthusiastic with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.Must be able to communicate effectively and proficiently in English both orally and in writing using proper grammar and vocabulary.Must be proficient in technology.PHYSICAL DEMANDSThe physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
