Position SummaryProvide technical support to pharmacy operations throughout the institution in accordance with established policies and procedures. Core tasks include medication restocking, prescription filling, IV admixture preparation, medication delivery to patient care units and providing patient and family centered care. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
ResponsibilitiesSupports the achievement of the goals and objectives of the Pharmacy Department
  • Knowledgeable of departmental policy and procedures and follows them in practice.
  • Attends at least 75% of pharmacy staff meetings (or has excused absences from the Manager).
  • Attends in-service education.
  • Performs such other duties as may be assigned by the Pharmacy Manager and/or their designee.
Assists in the receipt, distribution and control of medications
  • Accurately orders medications and supplies through the wholesaler or other sources as necessary to make medications available.
  • Actively participates in the following inventory control functions: receiving medications, returning medications to the wholesaler, maintaining appropriate inventory levels, and annual physical inventory procedures.
  • Routinely checks return bins and refrigerators for expired or discontinued medications and returns them to the pharmacy for processing.
  • Receives, documents, returns or disposes of patient medications from home according to established policies and procedures.
  • Performs monthly medication area inspections.
  • Accurately maintains medication stock in drug storage areas-including crash carts, medication boxes, and Pyxis machines.
  • Properly handles and processes patient issued medications that have been returned from the patient care areas.
  • Accurately receives controlled substances through the C2 safe.
  • Appropriately resolves and documents medication discrepancies.
  • Able to operate and maintain the Pyxis dispensing system.
  • Maintains the orderliness and cleanliness of the pharmacy spaces.
  • Generates, prints, processes, delivers and files standard reports in a timely manner.
  • Checks expiration dates and rotates drug inventories as assigned.
  • Proficiency uses all pharmacy information systems.
Prepares and delivers medications to patient care areas
  • Accurately prepares prescribed medication doses.
  • Delivers medications in a timely fashion to appropriate patient care areas after pharmacist verification.
  • Assists in the preparation of prescriptions for the Employee Prescription Program according to established procedures.
  • Accurately performs routine calculations associated with medication preparation.
  • Safely handles and disposes of hazardous medications.
  • Accurately compounds extemporaneous preparations according to approved procedures.
  • Accurately uses the unit dose packaging system for medications purchased in bulk.
Prepares IV admixtures
  • Follows aseptic procedures and universal precautions when preparing sterile products.
  • Properly cleans IV hoods per established procedures.
  • Accurately prepares admixtures with correct drug, dose, and diluent.
  • Dates vials and sterile products with the appropriate expiration date.
Assumes responsibility for own competency and professional development
  • Actively seeks learning experiences relevant to pharmacy practice.
  • Maintains current competency file.
  • Completes required annual training within expected time frame.
  • Continually strives to build and maintain high levels of competency in technical skills and responsibilities.
  • Maintains registration with the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy as required by the NC Board of Pharmacy.
  • Certified technicians maintain certification.
Utilizes hospital systems effectively to support financial viability of VBER/VCHO
  • Demonstrates economical use of time, supplies, and equipment.
  • Ensures appropriate and timely handling of charges and credits.
  • Makes recommendations to improve efficiency in operations when identified.
Demonstrates Patient Safety and Quality Improvement behaviors
  • Follows Patient Safety guidelines, organizational policies and procedures, professional standards of care, best practices, and regulatory requirements related to patient care quality.
  • Participates actively in Patient Safety and Quality Improvement activities and initiatives as assigned and alerts pharmacists to quality improvement opportunities.
  • Calls the Question by consistently recognizing patient safety and quality concerns and vocally advocates for the best care of the patient.
  • Consistently uses good judgment and thinks critically in order to make correct decisions.
  • Integrates behavioral based expectations into daily practice.
  • Displays individual responsibility and investment in patient care outcomes and key organizational goals.
Minimum RequirementsHigh School or greater degree is required- or higher.
Zero to two years related experience
