Edith C. Baker School is Hiring a Grade 1 Teacher (One Year Position) Near Brookline, MA

Job Description:

The Public Schools of Brookline seeks an enthusiastic and compassionate First Grade Teacher who is dedicated to creating a nurturing classroom atmosphere. This is a one-year position and the successful candidate will be adept at building strong relationships with students and fostering a love for learning while delivering a high-quality educational experience through engaging and interactive lessons that encourage student growth and curiosity. 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Creating a supportive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes active participation, curiosity, and teamwork among students.
  • Developing and implementing engaging lessons utilizing research-based instructional strategies, differentiated instruction, and assistive technologies to meet the diverse learning needs of students.
  • Supporting the development of executive functioning skills and social-emotional learning.
  • Differentiating instruction to meet the diverse learning needs, abilities, and interests of students and provide appropriate scaffolding and support as needed.
  • Collaborating with special education teachers, support staff, and related service providers to co-plan and co-teach lessons, differentiate instruction, and implement accommodations and modifications as required by student IEPs or 504 plans to support student access and success in the general education curriculum.
  • Monitoring student progress, collecting data, and using formative and summative assessments to measure student growth, adjust instruction, and make data-driven decisions to support student learning and achievement.
  • Utilizing a variety of instructional strategies, technology tools, and resources to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes.
  • Implementing effective assessment strategies to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Establishing and maintaining positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues, communicating regularly to provide updates on student progress, share strategies for supporting student success, and collaborate on interventions and supports.
  • Actively participating in professional development opportunities, department meetings, and school-wide initiatives to continuously improve teaching practices and contribute to a culture of collaboration and continuous learning.
  • Performing other duties as directed by school leadership. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Knowledge about early childhood learning and the developmental needs of early elementary students
  • Strong foundation in student-centered pedagogy
  • Ability to differentiate instruction and assess learning using a variety of methods
  • Strong classroom management skills
  • Commitment to creating and maintaining an inclusive and culturally responsive learning environment.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment and establish positive relationships with students, colleagues, and families
  • Reflective practitioner with a growth mindset and a willingness to adapt to the evolving needs of students and the school community
  • Massachusetts DESE teacher certification in Early Childhood (PreK-2) or Elementary (1-6)
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • SEI endorsement

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree
  • Previous experience teaching elementary school students
  • Experience with social-emotional learning practices and curricula

Reports To:

The Grade 1 Teacher will report to the school building principal.
