EDKEY is Hiring a DHH K-12 ASL Teacher for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students 23-24 School Year Near Mesa, AZ

POSITION OVERVIEW

About the Position

 Teach American Sign Language to students and staff, with the goal of effective communication, inside and outside of the school environment. Language instruction includes culturally and contextually relevant concepts, fingerspelling, grammatical features/principles, and linguistic information related to deaf people and sign language. Providing instruction on deaf culture and history and the role of sign language in deaf’ people’s lives and education (in the U.S.) allowing learners to become more familiar with various aspects of deaf peoples’ experiences and how these experiences impact deaf individuals and groups.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Deaf Education, linguistics studies; or Deaf studies

Experience

  • One year experience teaching and material development in ASL or working with deaf students in a school setting

Other Requirements

  • ASLPI 3.5 and or SLPI rating advanced or high
  • ASLTA certification
  • Possess a valid Arizona Special Education Teaching Certificate
  • Must possess or have the ability to possess a valid Level One Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.

Preferred Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Deaf Education, or closely related field
  • two or more years of teaching deaf students 

ESSENTIAL JOB TASKS

  • Plan and design curriculum – based instructional activities that build student competence in American Sign Language linguistics.
  • Design appropriate assessments that gauge student mastery of Arizona Common Core Standards.
  • Provide a strong language model using ASL and written English (i.e., reading, writing, vocabulary and communication skills).
  • Prepare reports, lesson plans, IEP’s and establish evaluation techniques for assessment of progress and maintain accurate and timely records of student progress.
  •  Be able to work effectively with a wide range of students
  • Helping each student learn subject using both American Sign Language and Written English.
  • Knowledge of student’s needs in the academic, social, and emotional areas.
  • Must have high energy and a willingness to devote the time required to help students be successful in the content and language acquisition.
  •  Be current with differential instructional strategies to teach DHH students

Working Conditions

Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, crouch, bend, walking up and down stairs/ramps, talk, hear, operate a computer, hand-held learning devices and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
