Position: Bilingual Health Education Coordinator

At Edúcate Ya, our goal is to break down the barriers of stigma and misinformation surrounding HIV/STIs in the Latinx LGBTQ community in Portland. Despite advancements in HIV/STI education and treatment, significant stigma persists, particularly in the Latinx LGBTQ community. This stigma can lead to underreporting, lack of access to healthcare, and mental health struggles. Our project targets these issues directly, addressing the unique challenges faced by Latinx gay, bisexual, MSM, transgender, nonbinary, and gender-diverse individuals.

About the Position:

The Bilingual Health Education Coordinator is responsible for maintaining the Educadores de Salud program at Edúcate Ya and the Latinx LGBTQ workshops. Educadores de Salud is a health equity program that brings information about HIV/AIDS and other sexual health topics to Portland’s Hispanic/Latinx community.

Responsibilities:

• Plan and coordinate trainings for the Health Educators Volunteer Program.
• Recruit participants for volunteer training events and workshops.
• Plan and coordinate five Latinx LGBTQ workshops over the next year, targeting previously trained Health Educators in our program and Latinx LGBTQ individuals:
• Utilize the popular education method, a non-hierarchical pedagogy that treats everyone as an educator and student, structuring sessions around group discussions and active participation.
• Adjust activities and discussions according to the participants' concerns and needs, ensuring relevance and high engagement.
• Coordinate activities such as group discussions, storytelling, role-playing, and Q&A sessions.
• Promote awareness, empathy, and understanding about HIV/STIs and the associated stigma.
• Conduct community outreach by communicating with other nonprofits and community organizations to recruit participants, schedule events, and explore opportunities for Edúcate Ya to engage with the community.
• Maintain correspondence with our volunteer base via email and phone.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bilingual language and bicultural skills -- fluent writing, speaking, and reading in Spanish and English strongly preferred. The person who fills this role should be prepared to carry out correspondence in Spanish, whether by phone, email, or in person.
• Familiarity with Google Drive and/or Microsoft Office, and Outlook.
• Excellent communication and organizational skills.
• Experience in coordinating community health programs, preferably with LGBTQ and Latinx communities.
• Knowledge of popular education methods.
• Exceptional communication and organizational skills.
• Ability to work in a collaborative environment and adjust to participants' needs.
