Elementary School is Hiring a .2 FTE* Elementary Orchestra/General Music Teacher beginning the 2024-2025 school year Near Pullman, WA

DEFINITION OF POSITION: The elementary orchestra/general music teacher will prepare lessons, instruct students, prepare students for musical performances at multiple schools in the district, and teach elementary string classes from beginner (grade 4) through advanced (grade 5) levels at all four elementary schools.

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:Elementary Principal

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possess or be eligible for a Washington State Teaching certificate with a music and/or instrumental music endorsement
  • Successful experience working with the elementary-age child
  • Knowledge of standard string pedagogy methods

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience teaching at the elementary level (grades K-5)
  • Experience teaching orchestra in a public school
  • Competence as a string instrument performer
  • Experience working with other music educators in the district
  • Experience organizing and presenting concerts
  • Experience and/or training in ESL/ELL (English as a Second Language)
  • Experience and/or training in using alternative classroom assessments

ESSENTIAL JOB-RELATED ACTIVITIES 

  • Identify the learning needs of individual students
  • Establish learning objectives consistent with the needs of students as well as with the District’s learning objectives and goals
  • Plan and develop a variety of instructional experiences appropriate to the specified learning objectives and outcomes
  • Conduct an effective instructional plan for the classroom
  • Integrate technology into the curriculum
  • Assess student achievement
  • Select and/or create appropriate instructional materials
  • Organize the physical setting so it contributes to learning and keep classroom materials well organized
  • Organize concerts and performances for each assigned group
  • Provide a positive classroom climate conducive to student learning
  • Develop and maintain clear standards for student conduct with appropriate disciplinary action
  • Work with the middle school/high school orchestra teacher to ensure a seamless scope and sequence for the orchestra program (grades 4 -12)
  • Recruit and retain students at the 4th and 5th grade orchestra levels
  • Demonstrate effective conducting skills
  • Demonstrate ability to work with students on all stringed instruments
  • Maintain effective communication with staff and families
  • Coordinate use of parent volunteers in the classroom learning experiences
  • Assume responsibility for school activities
  • Possess and practice strong interpersonal skills with a wide variety of people both inside and outside the organization (staff, parents, community members, other agencies, etc.)
  • Be a positive team builder who works in a collaborative manner
  • Meet multiple demands in pressure situations and maintain high levels of quality work
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Communicate clearly, both orally and in writing
  • Regularly demonstrate professionalism in appearance, actions, decisions, and overall performance
  • Work with minimal supervision and be flexible
  • Other duties as assigned 

TERMS OF CONTRACT:

  • Salary*: $10,567 - $19,916 per year (actual salary may vary based on finalized FTE), placement based on experience and level of education
  • Length of Contract*: .2 FTE (actual FTE may vary slightly based on final class schedule), 180 days plus professional development days
  • Leaves/Benefits: Medical, dental, vision, life and long-term disability coverage is provided through SEBB (School Employee Benefits Board) for employees who work at least 630 hours per academic year. Retirement benefits are provided through the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS). Additional benefits may include sick/emergency leave and personal leave as per the collective bargaining agreement between the Pullman Education Association (PEA) and the Pullman School District (PEA Bargaining Agreement).
