RATIONALE OF ROLE

The Director of Development (DOD) reports to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to build solid and sustainable philanthropic support for EMMAUS’s mission. The DOD provides a strategic fundraising vision and subsequently leads and implements all philanthropic functions for the organization. In this capacity, the DOD has responsibility for the development, administration, and management of the major and planned giving program, oversight of the annual fund and donor focused events, and leadership over the corporate and foundation partnerships. While all aspects of the fundraising program are important, the primary emphasis of this role will be placed on expanding major gifts.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Results-driven with experience cultivating leadership and major gifts, including supporting donor strategies, solicitation approaches and donor stewardship; demonstrated ability to close gifts; capital campaign experience is preferred.

  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in development and fundraising for not- for-profit organizations.
  • Minimum of 3 years of management experience preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree or professional fundraising certification is ideal.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with the CEO to expand the development strategic plan that is designed to increase revenue from existing donors, recapture lapsed donors, and secure new donors.
  • Maintain and strengthen a comprehensive portfolio of 90-100 individual donors with the ability to make major gift contributions to EMMAUS on an annual basis, personally executing cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities.
  • Actively network to identify new donors and expand the organization's reach.
  • Develop an engagement strategy for every donor in a major gift portfolio and provide both leadership and accountability for the portfolio managers at EMMAUS.
  • Provide oversight and direction for the annual fund program, including mailings, virtual, and annual fundraising drives.
  • Develop and oversee the implementation of innovative, multi-channel strategies for mid-level donor acquisition, retention, and growth.
  • Work with EMMAUS development staff and operations/programs to create and implement an annual calendar of stewardship activities designed to cultivate and steward current and prospective supporters at all giving levels.
  • Oversees and coordinates a schedule of donor cultivation events, leveraging existing special events and identifying new opportunities to introduce current and prospective supporters to EMMAUS’ work in creative and inspiring ways.
  • Work with EMMAUs administrative staff to implement an effective communication strategy that raises awareness of the organization’s impact and cultivates support.
  • Provide strategic guidance and staff support to EMMAUS’ executive staff and boards in their work to build relationships with major and lapsed donors, including recommending strategies and crafting materials to support their efforts.
  • Works with leadership to adhere to policies and procedures to further the Emmaus religious purpose and religious freedom.

WORK REQUIREMENTS

  • This position requires a personal and saving relationship with Jesus Christ.
  • This position requires a Christ-like servant leader who has a sense of calling and who models Biblical principles.
  • Must be a member of a Bible believing church or an active participant in a Bible believing church.
  • Must live in or around Chicago with means of transportation enabling local outreach.
  • Mixture of reasonable remote and in-office work, daytime and reasonable nighttime hours (as-needed) to provide a consistent presence and accessibility to those seeking service.
  • Able to navigate exposure to elicit online content, with the support of protective processes and technology, to find and connect with victims.
  • Strong verbal and writing abilities.
  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
