Empowerment Resource Center is Hiring a Certified Medical Assistant Near Atlanta, GA

Job Description

Job Classification: Certified Medical Assistant

Reports To: Assistant Director of Clinical Operations

FLSA Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt

Summary: The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) will support medical providers in a community- based clinical setting. The incumbent will provide basic and routine assistance with the delivery of clinical and non-clinical services and client care within the medical assistant scope of practice and required certifications in accordance with ERC standards, policies, practices, and procedures and applicable local, state, and federal regulations. Serves as primary Laboratory Technician and will be responsible for the facilitation of phlebotomy and specimen collection. Reporting directly to the Assistant Director of Clinical Operations, the incumbent will prepare clients for clinic care visit; record and monitor vital signs; place clients in exam room for provider evaluation; support patient care delivery and assist providers during examination and treatment. The incumbent will also administer and/or dispense medications as ordered by the providers, and perform all ancillary tasks as ordered by the Assistant Director of Clinical Operations. Will assist in maintaining a neat, clean and orderly appearance in the exam rooms and overall center throughout the day; maintain supply inventory, clean rooms and equipment, and stock rooms with required supplies; and other duties as assigned. In addition, the incumbent will provide reproductive health and treatment education.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepares patients for the health care visit by directing and/or accompanying them to the examining room; providing examination gowns and drapes; helping them to position themselves for the examination and/or treatment; arranging examining room instruments, supplies, and equipment.
  • Verifies patient information by interviewing patient; taking vital signs; confirming purpose of visit or treatment.
  • Supports patient care delivery by helping health care providers during examinations; disposing of contaminated supplies; sterilizing medical instruments; administering medications on the premises; authorizing drug refills as directed; and telephoning prescriptions to pharmacies.
  • Completes records by recording patient examination and treatment.
  • Administers intramuscular injections of medications or vaccines as ordered by provider
  • Administers and reads intradermal purified protein derivative (PPD) injections.
  • Administers oral medication as ordered by provider.
  • Counts out and labels medications for patient dispensing. These will be reviewed by providers before being given to patients.
  • Administers HIV testing and results counseling.
  • Comforts patients by anticipating anxieties and effectively answering questions. 
  • Advises clients regarding reproductive health and treatment.
  • Conducts sexually transmitted infection (STI) and HIV prevention education, risk reduction and family planning counseling, testing, and referral services; and enrollment in biomedical HIV programs (PrEP and PEP).
  • Delivers approved CDC evidence-based behavioral interventions.
  • Educates patients by providing medication information, reviewing instructions, and answering questions.
  • Deciphers best method for obtaining blood sample, depending on the specific client.
  • Obtains blood specimens from clients per laboratory orders by performing venipunctures and finger sticks.
  • Collects and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis and document results in electronic medical record.
  • Maintains quality control in collecting specimens, ensure appropriate disposal of contaminated items and maintain accurate record keeping.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment and supplies. Set up, maintain, calibrate, clean, and test sterility of medical laboratory equipment.
  • Complies with all laboratory policies and OSHA regulations related to safety, cleanliness, and infection control.
  • Completes lab requisition forms and produce appropriate labels for forms and specimen.
  • Organizes and cleans exam rooms, including general cleaning upkeep and restocking of supplies.
  • Ensures safety checklists and quality controls are completed as required.
  • Keeps supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt.
  • Keeps equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and protects operations by keeping patient care information confidential.
  • Serves and protects the physician or health care provider practice by adhering to professional standards, policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Education and/or Experience: High school graduate or equivalent required. Graduate from an accredited Medical Assistant program is required. Certified Phlebotomist is preferred but not required. Experience with EMR/EHR system is required. 
  • Certifications, Licenses, Registrations: Graduate from an accredited Medical Assistant program is required.
  • Language Skills: Fluency in English and Spanish is preferred. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, participants, funders, and the general public.
  • Computer Skills: Must possess extensive computer skills and experience with software use (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe, etc.) Must be proficient in Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Electronic mail software – Email software; Microsoft Exchange. Medical software – Electronic medical/health records software; Client management software. Helpful if have experience in Greenway.
  • Mathematical Skills: Basic math, bookkeeping and accounting skills.
  • Reasoning Ability: Effective computer skills to input to use bookkeeping and account management software in a timely and efficient manner. Strong communication, including writing, speaking and active listening. Must be a great communicator, meticulous, and possess excellent interpersonal skills. Great customer service skills, including interpersonal conversation, patience and empathy. Good problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Organization, time management and prioritization abilities. Ability to be discreet and maintain the security of patient or customer information. Understanding of industry-specific policies, such as HIPAA regulations for health care. Demonstrate the ability to exercise discretion, independent judgment, and business acumen. Exhibit the finesse to handle private, confidential, protected, and sensitive information. Possess a genuine empathy for clients and a willingness to help others. Possess excellent communication skills and the tact to deal effectively with clients, guests, program staff, medical and behavioral health professionals, and executive-level staff. Must have the ability to interact with professional staff and clients from diverse socioeconomic background, races, and cultures. Must be a great communicator, meticulous, and possess excellent interpersonal skills. Must have the ability to conduct Internet research. 

Employment Standards & Conditions: Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check. Must submit verification of completion of the following current health screenings:

  • COVID-19 vaccination
  • Influenza immunization
  • Tuberculin Skin Test (TB) within the past 12 months
  • HBV immunization (required if position requires direct contact with clients)

Standard Hours: 9am – 6pm. The Clinic has extended hours until 8pm two nights per week. Incumbent must be flexible to work 11am – 8pm one day per week. The Clinic will begin opening on Saturday in Q1 2022. Flexibility to work a Saturday is needed.
