Energy Solutions - USA is Hiring a Remote Engineering Fellow (Remote - US)

We are currently seeking a full-time Engineering Fellow to join our Codes and Standards Department and to provide leadership across our company as a mechanical equipment specialist. As a member of the Energy Solutions team, you will have a broad impact on state, national and international energy markets through our work for major utilities, local and state governments, and other national leaders in energy efficiency policy. The candidate selected to fill this position will bring a track record of industry leadership in promoting energy efficiency and decarbonization for an array of residential and nonresidential mechanical equipment types. Expertise should include at least several of the following technology types: heat pump technologies (including air-source heat pumps, hydronic heat pumps, and variable refrigerant flow systems), energy and heat recovery systems, dedicated outdoor air systems, refrigeration systems, motor driven systems (including high performance fans and pumps and air distribution system design), low global warming potential refrigerants, thermal energy storage, and load management / demand flexibility. Candidates should have a comprehensive understanding of equipment efficiency and system design interactions to achieve enhanced energy performance and real-world / field experience designing, installing, and/or managing these systems. The ideal candidate will also have strong communication and leadership skills and demonstrated experience working with and leading teams of engineers and other industry stakeholders on efficiency efforts related to these products and systems. The candidate will also have a track record of successful codes and standards advocacy, strategy development and stakeholder engagement, including experience with state and federal codes and standards proceedings, test procedure development, and/or model codes and reach/stretch codes. Experience working on AHRI, ASHRAE, IEEE, NEMA, ASME, IISE certifications, standards, committees or working groups is a plus, as is experience with U.S. Department of Energy’s Industrial Assessment Centers (IAC).

Daily responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop and lead both short-term and long-term strategies to optimize energy savings, load management potential, and GHG reductions through codes and standards or other energy policy proposals
  • Oversee the work of subject matter experts who bring deep knowledge of specific commercial and industrial technologies; steer research teams, technical analyses, and stakeholder engagement
  • Oversee analysis of the savings, costs, and other impacts of energy efficient and low carbon technologies in the context of energy policy
  • Oversee product testing and other primary data collection strategies needed to fill data gaps in policy settings
  • Provide strategic leadership in industry working groups and technical committees in support of voluntary or mandatory standards and test procedure updates
  • Develop strategic partnerships with industry stakeholders to ensure policy proposals are feasible, equitable, and have ample stakeholder support 
  • Oversee development of reports on technical topics, such as Title 24 code change proposal reports, including energy savings analyses, cost-effectiveness analyses, and market impacts analyses 
  • Develop and deliver presentations on technical topics to a variety of audiences, including clients, government agency decision makers, engineers, and other stakeholders
  • Represent clients in public meetings, negotiated rulemakings, and in publicly docketed comments
  • Provide oversight and guidance for supporting staff and other team members contributing to all of the above activities 
  • Lead the overall direction, management, quality control, and completion of project deliverables, within budget and on schedule, with minimal oversight. Monitor the progress of projects and communicating progress to managers and clients

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in engineering and/or PE license (mechanical engineering preferred)
  • At least 15 years of engineering or work experience / leadership in related areas of energy efficiency and decarbonization of mechanical products and systems

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent verbal communication skills, and demonstrated success in public speaking and providing technical presentations to knowledgeable audiences
  • Excellent written communications skills, demonstrated ability to write reports technical papers in support of technical policy development 
  • Experience in the development process of Title 24, ASHRAE 90.1, ASHRAE 189, IECC, or other energy codes
  • Experience in the development process of California’s Title 20, US DOE’s Appliance Standards Program, or other state, national, or international appliance or equipment standards or test procedures 
  • Experience working with manufacturers of equipment regulated by energy codes and standards; familiarity with supply chain and market channels
  • Experience leading or overseeing product and equipment testing efforts, including developing test plans, troubleshooting challenges, analyzing lab data, coordinating with national or international testing facilities
  • Experience representing large organizations in public meetings, including government hearings
  • Track record of success working in collaborative roles with diverse teams of partners and industry stakeholders
  • Existing network of professional contacts that contribute to codes and standards development
  • Eagerness to learn and take on new challenges to support our company’s mission
  • Willingness to conduct occasional business travel

Compensation to commensurate with experience with the pay band of $135,000 t0 $165,000/Annually
