The New Mexico Forestry Division retains lead responsibility for wildland fire management on all non-federal, non-tribal, and non-municipal lands, maintaining fire suppression capacities and emphasizing public and firefighters safety.

The Forestry Division promotes healthy, sustainable forests and watersheds in New Mexico for the benefit of current and future generations.

Why does the job exist?

The purpose of this position is to coordinate and supervise a 10-20 person fire crew on Wildland Fire, Planned Fire (Rx), and thinning projects.

Assist in the operations of the Inmate Work Camp in Los Lunas, New Mexico as needed. Ensure the application of policies, procedures and laws relating to the use of fire fighters to conduct emergency activities and natural resource projects.

Provide professional training, development of National Wildfire Coordinator Group (NWCG) redcarded fire fighters and technical assistance to Forestry Employees and cooperators.

This program is designed as a significant work force in the maintenance, protection, and improvement of our state and federal natural resources.

The program was developed through the combined efforts of the Energy, Minerals and NaturalResources Department Forestry Division (EMNRD) and the Department of Military Affairs, and in cooperation with state, federal and local governments.

Forestry Division is responsible for supervision of the program, training and equipping work crews, planning and coordination of suppression activities with cooperating land management agencies.

Operate as a crew supervisor, leading, managing and transporting fire crew members to and from emergency assignments and project work.

How does it get done?

Provide direct supervision of assistant crew boss and ten member crews, Conduct on the job training (OJT) along with tailgate safety briefings, after action reviews and document them, Transport crews to and from assigned fires / trainings / projects in safe and timely manner while maintaining a CDL, Ensure that crew members are issued and have the required safety equipment,

Compile daily / weekly / monthly reports and submit to Camp Supervisor, Act as a NWCG crew boss responsible for crew members assigned, Ensure that NWCG crew standards are met and qualifications are in line with PMS 310-1, Ensure fire fighters have required NWCG and EMNRD training, Assist with formulating the Wildfire Response Program policies and procedures and ensure that they and associated Division and Departmental policies are adhered to and followed, Enter and update monthly project accomplishments into OARS for projects that you are assigned and responsible for daily, weekly and monthly, Ensure that the grounds at the facility are maintained, clean of all trash and weeds and debris, Ensure tools are serviced and repaired to good operating condition after use or when damaged, Assist in the daily / weekly / monthly inspection of vehicles per Forestry Division Policy and Procedures, Prepare agreements and develop project plans, Assist in the monthly inspection of vehicles following Policy and Procedures and maintain vehicle in proper and safe working order, Ensure that crew manifests and crew weight meets NWCG standards, Ensure that crews meet Type 2 IA standards, Ensure that vehicles are maintained to DOT standards.

The State of New Mexico, US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Indian Affairs local government agencies.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have experience in the following :

  • Crew Boss
  • NWCG ICT5
  • Commercial Drivers License
  • Must be able to pass a background check

Minimum Qualification

High school education or equivalent and two (2) seasons of wildland fire response. Must have NWCG qualifications as Fire Fighter Type 1 (FFT1) as specified in PMS 310-1.

Season means a total of 90 days fire response experience within a calendar year).

Employment Requirements

Must maintain valid New Mexico Driver's License and possess a class "B" Commercial Drivers License within six (6) months of hire.

Obtain certification to operate UTV's / ATV's. Must perform an arduous pack test annually. Subject to initial and random urinalysis and alcohol test.

Posses a valid National Wildfire Coordinator Group Red Card with wildfire qualification standards. A criminal background investigation will be required, including fingerprints, attend a annual refresher class as required Ability to maintain American Red Cross Standard First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) card.

Duty station has potential to be relocated.
