Eligibility Requirements:
  • Be 18 years or older (no upper age limit)
  • Hold one of the following citizenship or legal residency statuses:
    • US citizen, US National, Lawful Permanent Resident (i.e. Green Card status), and persons legally residing within a state.
    • Examples of persons legally residing within a state may include those holding the following classifications: refugee, asylee, temporary protected status throughout VISTA service, and holding Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status.

YouthBuild VISTA Goal:
To increase the number of YouthBuild students advancing academically, earning a high school diploma or equivalency, succeeding in college, and or gaining employment.

The objective of VISTA Assignment:
To assist in providing services, resources, and training to the Compton Survival Initiative: Safety, Transformation, Outreach, Peace (CSI: STOP).
Activity 1: Onboarding and Program Integration
Step 1: Onboard and Integrate into EntreNous Youth Empowerment Services, Inc
  • Meet the team
  • Attend staff meetings
  • Observe the organization and learn the mission, vision, and values
  • Gain familiarity with internal processes and tools
Step 2: Spend Time With the Organization’s Executive Directors and Partners
  • Understand the priorities and culture of the organization including philosophy and the YouthBuild model
  • Build relationships with existing and new partners for service delivery
Step 3: Sit in on YouthBuild Classes
  • Observe YouthBuild teachers and program members in their classes
  • Gain further understanding of the YouthBuild model
Step 4: Spend Time With the Manager of Violence Interruption, CSI STOP Staff
  • Move into a deeper understanding of the role within the Violence Prevention Department and greater organization.
  • Gain knowledge of Electronic Records, databases, and documentation systems.
  • Gain knowledge of desired program outcomes and data collection priorities.
  • Gain knowledge of initiatives that use a public health model to prevent violence and crime.

Outcomes
  • Onboard and integrate into EntreNous Youth Empowerment Services, Inc.
  • Gain a deeper understanding of the Violence Interruption VISTA role within the Violence Prevention Department and greater organization.

Activity 2: Gain Further Knowledge of CSI STOP
Step 1: Review the CSI STOP Grant Application
  • Gain further understanding of CSI STOP’s
    • Need in the Compton community
    • Project description
    • Organizational capacity and coordination
    • Project monitoring and evaluation methods
Step 2: Review CSI STOP’s Four Pillar Approach
  • CSI STOP will create a four-pillar approach to decreasing violence in Compton:
    • (1) Alerts
    • (2) Crisis Intervention/Interruption
    • (3) Intensive Case/Care Management
    • (4) Focused Service Provision
      • Gain a thorough understanding of each pillar, how they are connected, and how they contribute to the missions of CSI STOP and EntreNous/Compton YouthBuild.
  • Consider how to assist in developing this four-pillar approach and facilitating communication between all key players.
    • For instance, ask yourself questions such as:
      • How will community interrupters be alerted to a threat? What system could be put in place to facilitate this process?
      • How will community interrupters be dispatched to de-escalate a violent situation?
      • What could be included in the action plan to determine retaliation potential and mediation needs, as well as identify potential hot spots?
Step 3: Gain Further Knowledge of CSI STOP’s Key Partners
  • CSI STOP is an alliance of four key partners, each providing specific training, resources, and services to ensure the successful implementation of the CSI STOP project.
    • The key partners are:
      • 1. EntreNous Youth Empowerment Services, Inc/ Compton YouthBuild (EYES/CYB)
      • The Professional Community Intervention Training Institute (PCITI)
      • 2. Centinela Youth Services (CYS)
      • 3. Compton Lives Matters (CLM)
  • Review how each partner contributes to providing services, resources, and training to CSI STOP.
Step 4: Attend CSI STOP Meetings and Events
  • Attend CSI STOP planning and outreach events.
  • Learn about the Manager of Violence Interruption role and relevant priorities.
  • Recognize the key individuals/stakeholders represented at CSI STOP meetings and events.
  • Brainstorm/learn how to support CSI STOP as a Violence Interruption VISTA.
Outcomes
  • Further knowledge of CSI STOP including grant activities, key partners, and utilizing a community-based approach to decrease violence.
  • Gain a greater insight into the systems that need to be developed for effective implementation of the Compton Survival Initiative: Safety, Transformation, Outreach, and Peace.

Activity 3: Community Engagement
Step 1: Create a Community Engagement Strategy
  • A community engagement strategy is a step-by-step plan that details how to involve a community in bringing about social change.
  • Consider the four-pillar approach again and how to facilitate and sustain community engagement
  • Consider the 5 prong approach for referrals to CSI STOP
  • Remember that trust, transparency, communication, and commitment are vital for authentic community engagement.
Step 2: Research Community Resources
  • Identify community resources
    • For instance, research all hospitals in the area with violence intervention/prevention services
  • Assist program members in accessing services that can address the underlying root causes of their actions- such as meeting housing needs
Step 3: Create a Navigation Binder for Community Resources
  • Prepare a navigation binder for all community resources
  • Include a measure to navigate to each community resource
  • Categorize community resources
  • Create a navigation binder with sections describing the variety of resources provided and whom each resource pertains.

Outcomes
  • Develop capacity-building partnerships within the community
  • A community engagement approach
  • A navigation binder for community resources

Activity 4: Provide Administrative Support to CSI STOP Staff
Step 1: Refresh Knowledge and Skills in Providing Administrative Support
  • Refresh skills and knowledge in record keeping, administration, filing systems, excel, and database management
    • Utilize Catchafire if needed
    • Utilize SBDC/SBA if needed
Step 2: Support With Qualitative and Quantitative Data Collection
  • Support data collection methods such as:
    • Observation of the program in real-time
    • Conducting individual interviews and focus groups
    • Conducting surveys of participants as well as key stakeholders (individuals and organizations)
    • Researching publicly available data on violent crime trends in Compton, CA.
  • Support the collection of quantifiable data such as
    • participant demographics
    • referral source
    • level of involvement with the justice system (type of crime, pending cases, convictions etc.)
    • gang affiliation/association
    • experiences with trauma and in the foster care system
    • mental health challenges/services
    • employment and family history
    • family structure and housing status
  • Document all data collected.
Step 3: Assist CSI STOP Staff with Administrative Priorities
  • Help perform duties in record keeping, filing systems, excel, and database management
  • Help assure the smooth operation and implementation of CSI STOP in the Compton community.

Outcomes
  • Administrative Support to CSI STOP staff to ensure efficient implementation and operation of the Compton Survival Initiative.
  • Support with quantitative and qualitative data collection.

Activity 5: Community Engagement (cont.)
Step 1: Create a Call Log
  • Create a call log to monitor everyone that we contact and need to keep in connection with.
Step 2: Assist with Community Listening Sessions
  • Focusing on establishing an interconnected and structured system, CSI STOP will establish regular and ongoing engagement by holding monthly stakeholder meetings for the purpose of disseminating information and giving “voice” to the community we serve.
    • These community listening sessions will help focus accountability to the work, provide the basis for continuous quality improvement (CQI) and are critical to the overall sustainability of the program.
  • Utilize call log and community engagement approach to assist in the planning of community listening sessions
  • Try to attend all community listening sessions
Step 3: Create a Community Event Calendar
  • Create a community event calendar to document all upcoming events for CSI STOP.
  • Share details on upcoming events.
Step 4: Create a Team Calendar
  • Create a team calendar that will be useful for CSI STOP staff and the Peace Building team.
Step 5: Create Recruitment/Event Flyers
  • Create at least one recruitment or event flyer to help increase CSI STOP program awareness.

  • Support CSI STOP’s mission to create an ecosystem so that the community knows where to go in times of crisis.
