Staff Scientist I, Compliance – HealthcareJob Summary:The Staff Scientist I (SSI) is an experienced environmental health and safety professional who provides subject matter expertise as a project lead to various long-term or short-term Healthcare projects. The SSI will provide consultation for our growing healthcare practice, working with both regional and national clients to audit and improve the hospital physical environment as well as the environment of care, life safety, occupational monitoring and industrial hygiene programs. This position has the responsibility to help with providing and further developing the healthcare training program, shaping marketable services in the healthcare sector, and developing potential clients.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities:Healthcare Regulatory Compliance:
  • Provide guidance to healthcare clients to ensure physical environment/environment of care and life safety compliance with CMS, TJC, DNV, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Perform building inspections/tours, inspection, testing and maintenance document review, policy and procedure development & review.
Environment of Care:
  • Participate in Environment of Care/Safety Committee meetings, supporting clients with data collection and review for safety related topics (water management, hazardous waste compliance, differential pressure relationships, etc).
  • Perform risk assessments under guidance of senior staff, conducting audits to measure the performance of safety related metrics.
Fire and Life Safety Compliance:
  • Recognize fire and life safety compliance issues in the hospital environment (eg. corridor obstructions, damaged fire doors/walls, missing/damaged emergency equipment) and options for correcting issues.
  • Perform and evaluate fire drills and other fire safety related training.
  • Incorporate familiarity with NFPA Life Safety Codes and other relevant standards to support clients in daily work.
Pre-Construction Risk Assessment:
  • Provide assistance with assessing construction projects for their impact on the healthcare environment, including risks to infection control, life safety, and other physical environment hazards (noise, vibration).
  • Assist in assessing compliance with measures enacted to mitigate these hazards with clients and other team members.
Safety Training:
  • Assist in development and provision of formal and informal training to staff and personnel (both internal and client staff) related to any of the above.
  • Maintain and update Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) policies and databases; preparing and delivering EH&S training programs; updating written materials as needed.
Other Duties:
  • Other tasks or duties as needed to support client/project work.
Minimum Qualifications Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Bachelors degree required.
  • Bachelors degree preferred in EH&S or a related field, with applicable studies such as safety, industrial hygiene, fire & life safety, public health, environmental health, or the natural & physical sciences.
  • Preferred certifications include: Certified Hospital Safety Professional (CHSP), Certified Hospital Facility Manager (CHFM), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Certified Safety Professional (CSP); HAZWOPER certification; DOT/RCRA certification.
  • 3 years of EH&S experience required.
  • Experience in the healthcare environment (hospitals, long term care, ambulatory care, etc). preferred.
  • Functional and foundational understanding of compliance including NFPA regulations in healthcare settings, TJC/CMS, EOC highly preferred.
  • Must possess proven verbal and written communication skills and be able to function as part of a team & independently
  • Strong attention to detail in technical reports, project scope & ability to think critically.
  • Proficient with MS Office suite of products & Adobe.
  • Travel within Boston and the New England area is required, with occasional national travel required.
