They familiarize themselves with different wood grain patterns to ensure they make clean cuts. While sawyers primarily cut wood, they may work with other materials.

Sawyers primarily use pit saws as their main tools. They may also use handsaws, table saws, wire saws and circular saws. They can ensure that their equipment is in working condition so that they can make clean cuts and minimize safety hazards. Sawyers may be responsible for troubleshooting issues with their equipment and performing basic maintenance tasks like replacing dull blades.

Sawyer is responsible for learning safety protocols in their specific workplaces. They may learn what safety equipment to wear and certain procedures for operating equipment. If a sawyer is new to their position, they may have to operate equipment in the presence of someone with more training and experience. By following all established safety protocols, a sawyer can help improve efficiency in the workplace and promote their personal safety and the welfare of their fellow employees.
