Reporting to the Lead Teacher, the substitute teacher’s basic function is to be responsible for implementing program and providing direct service to children between the ages of 2 years thru 5 years, as scheduled. This includes being flexible with schedule to best meet the program needs on any given day.

To provide direct service to children in the toddler and preschool programs in the absence of the assigned classroom teacher. 

Position Responsibilities:

  • Assist classroom staff in implementation of developmentally and culturally appropriate activities according to classroom lesson plans for small and large groups of children
  • Use active supervision techniques to supervise children at all times
  • Encourages children in developing a sense of responsibility and respect for their own, others, and the program property by modeling these behaviors appropriately.
  • Assures proper care of the program equipment and supplies, including cleaning up of the area after activities.
  • Participate in the recruitment of children and families for Erie House programs
  • Act as an ambassador for the Erie Neighborhood House Child Care program
  • Open/close classrooms as assigned
  • Remain in the classroom to supervise and children whose parent picks up late as needed
  • Take direction from classroom staff regarding classroom rules and routines
  • Monitor overall health and safety of children in the classroom, reporting any signs of illness, injury or abuse to the classroom teacher
  • Responsible for the program complying with Erie’s, the Board of Ed’s and all City and State licensing requirements and performance standards, including promoting the health and safety of all the children, following sanitation procedures and universal precautions, completing a physical exam, complying with the Confidentiality and Child Abuse and Neglect Acts as a mandated reporter, as well as the American’s with Disabilities Act and Erie’s Inclusion Policy. 
  • Maintain current Illinois Gateways Registry membership
  • Maintain five hours of Gateways approved trainings per program year
  • Participate in 20 hours of professional development per program year
  • Attend monthly all staff meetings, agency meetings and in-service trainings as required
  • Other duties as assigned 

Requirements

  • 60 Semester hours of the college with 9 hrs. directly related to Early Childhood Development
  • 2-3 years' experience working in a nursery or licensed daycare
  • Must obtain a Gateways Credential Infant and Toddler Credential Level 1(working towards Level 5 by 2024)
  • Must be able to sit on the floor for extended periods of time
  • Experience working in a licensed day care center
  • Bilingual/bicultural Spanish preferred
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Physical constraints required include, but not limited to, the ability to lift and carry children and other items weighing up to 50 pounds including evacuation of the building during emergencies.
  • Demonstrates the following qualities: self-motivated, self-directed, follows directions, makes good judgments, creative, reliable, and dependable. 
  • Exhibits sincere interest in working with children and is knowledgeable regarding children's development and growth.
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the U.S.
  • Upon offer of employment, must complete all forms related to hiring, including Erie’s application and employment status and 3 letters of recommendation. In addition, must complete all DCFS forms, including a Criminal Background Check, Fingerprinting and a Child Abuse and Neglect Background Check.
