Job Title: Principal

Job Class: Full Time, Senior Leadership, Exempt

Reports to: Head of School

Position Overview

This position oversees the organizational, operational, and academic functions of the San
Pablo Lower and Middle School Divisions, supporting in the development of the school’s
strategic plans, programs, and budgets; and directing the day-to-day operation of all activities
involving the students, families, faculty, and staff that make up the San Pablo campus
community. The Principal leads, manages, and administers the IB Primary and Middle Years
Programmes for the holistic development of learners, and also promotes parent and community
involvement. The Principal serves on the Senior Leadership Team and reports to the Head of
School.

General Responsibilities

  • Maintain congruence between the school’s mission and all activities of the school.
  • Maintain a visible presence on the San Pablo Campus of the school and be available to

students, faculty, staff and parents; to work toward a resolution of all problems - both
routine and unique - as they arise.

  • Keep the Head of School informed of the general programs, activities, and challenges of
the school.
  • Responsible for the operation of the San Pablo Lower and Middle School programs,
including compliance with regulations, and communications with staff and families.
  • Function as the chief articulator of programs, expectations, behavioral guidelines, and
other information necessary to ensure that all constituencies are fully informed and
cognizant of their roles.
  • Lead and manage the high school placement process for students and partner with
families and prospective high schools to ensure matriculation success.
  • In partnership with the Head of School, responsible for the oversight of Grade 2-8
academics, innovation, and professional growth of the faculty and staff in alignment
with best teaching, learning and assessment practices for student success.
  • Serve as a key member of the Pedagogical Team and Middle School Student Success
Team. Along with the Grade PK-1 Principal, co-chair the Pedagogical Team. Serve on
Student Success Teams.
  • Along with the Head of School and Grade PK-1 Principal, oversee the CAIS/WASC
accreditation process.
  • Oversee the IB PYP and MYP self-study and reauthorization process.
  • Along with the Head of School and Grade PK-1 Principal, oversee the development of

the Master Calendar, Annual Professional Development Plan, Faculty Meeting Plan, and
other strategic organizational documents.

  • Serve on Board Committees as assigned by the Head of School.

Specific Areas of Responsibility

In relation to Student Learning:

  • Oversee the IB Primary and Middle Years Programmes, supervise the PYP and MYP
Coordinators and support with all relevant functions of their roles, and collaborate with
other members of the Pedagogical Leadership Team in the development and
implementation of the IB Middle Years Programme.
  • Along with the Grade PK-1 Principal, co-chair the Pedagogical Leadership Team,
overseeing academic strategy on a schoolwide level, across programmes and
campuses.
  • Monitor and guide the developmental growth and learning of all Middle School
students. Maintain complete academic records for all students and oversee the
evaluation and the reporting of progress and methods used by teachers in measuring
student achievement.
  • In partnership with the Pedagogical and Senior Leadership Teams, ensure educational
excellence as well as alignment between the curriculum, co-curricular programming, the
school mission, and EBI Portrait of the Graduate.
  • Oversee Language Acquisition: Spanish-English bilingual program, Language
Acquisition track (LAT) and the DELE testing program.
  • Oversee MAP Testing, supervise implementation, and utilize data to guide strategic
decision-making.

In relation to Faculty and Staff Leadership:

  • Lead the San Pablo Lower and Middle School faculty in articulating the school mission,
school goals, department goals, course objectives, subject objectives, methods, and
means of assessment through the development of academic policies and curriculum.
  • Act as the educational leader for the San Pablo Lower and Middle School, responsible
for day-to-day operations. Direct the activities of the members of the school
instructional and the non-instructional staff in the performance of their duties.
  • Observe, supervise, and evaluate the San Pablo Lower and Middle School faculty in the
development and implementation of curriculum; supervise the learning process, and
review and evaluate the academic programs.
  • Develop and maintain the San Pablo Lower and Middle School professional
development program in collaboration with the Head of School to provide consistency
in school practices.
  • Strive for unity, harmony, and cooperation through tact, helpfulness, respect, and a
recognition of individual differences and the special abilities and strengths of each team
member.
  • Monitor employee satisfaction and level of engagement and make modifications for
improvement as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Head of School regarding the hiring,retention, and assignment of
faculty.
  • Assist with establishing programs for the orientation of new teachers, for in-service
training of all teachers, and for the evaluation of classroom teachers, to ensure that
teachers are familiar with and adhere to school policies in all areas of the school
operation.
  • Prepare San Pablo Lower and Middle School class schedules, in collaboration with
other division leaders and the Head of School. ssign teachers and students to classes
and other obligations.
  • Oversee and direct the activities of faculty committees.
  • Conduct regular meetings with faculty regarding routine school matters while promoting

the exchange of ideas on issues of educational/philosophical interest and concern.

In relation to Community and Student Behavior:

  • Responsible for establishing guidelines for proper student conduct, ensuring alignment
with the school’s mission, values, and the IB Learner Profile. Balance the individual
needs of students with that of the entire community, while upholding community
standards for behavior.
  • Serve as a consultant to teachers in matters of classroom management, teaching
methods, and general school procedures.
  • Ensure the well-being and success of students.
  • Supervise and oversee the development of a San Pablo Lower and Middle School

extra-curricular program which includes community service, clubs, sports teams and
social experiences.

  • Oversee the coordination of co-curricular and extracurricular activities and programs of
the school, including the planning and presentation of school assemblies and special
events, the maintenance of a comprehensive calendar of school events.

In relation to Family Communication:

  • Plan and present informative sessions for parents related to curriculum, learning,
student data, and assessment.
  • Lead and oversee the grade reporting preparation cycle and process, including
reviewing report cards and comments.
  • Manage all communication between the school and families regarding the Middle
School program.
  • Regularly communicate with parents regarding school activities, events and the
program.
  • Meet parents, as needed, regarding the specific needs of their children.

In relation to the Advancement Office:

  • Assist in the admission process including working with faculty to review and update
admission tests. Support testing and evaluation of applicants in collaboration with the
Director of Admissions.
  • Participate in all admissions-specific events such as Open Houses and tours.
  • Support and participate in the school's efforts to advance the mission of the school,

including community and fundraising events.

In relation to Business and Operations:

  • Provide an orderly, well-managed environment in which learning can take place, a
school climate which is supportive and which reflects high morale. Monitor employee
satisfaction and level of engagement and make modifications for improvement as
needed.
  • Ensure compliance with legal requirements of government regulations and
agencies.Maintain the educational standards established by the State of California and
those agencies responsible for examining and accrediting the school.
  • Maintain and oversee divisional operating budgets as assigned by the Business Office
and Head of School.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of school.

Qualification and Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Education or related field required.
  • Two or more years of experience as an administrative leader is required, preferably in an
IB school.
  • Five or more years as a classroom teacher is required, preferably in IB schools.
  • Knowledge and expertise of the IB PYP and MYP are required.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English is required. Native Spanish strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of the physical, social and emotional developmental stages of
primary and middle school students.
  • Extensive expertise in building and growing Primary and Middle School programming.
  • Strong knowledge and experience with best practices in Middle School curriculum,
instruction, and assessment.
  • Deep understanding of high school readiness and placement.
  • Deep understanding of IB school communities with an ability to design, implement, and
evaluate innovative educational programs for multiple constituencies.
  • Understanding and commitment to DEI/social justice, including anti-bias and safe
identity educational practices.
  • Willingness to collaborate with diverse constituencies, work in a diverse team, and be a
leader.
  • Flexibility, given the uncertain times we are living through.
