The Lutheran Center (national office) is located in Chicago, Illinois. A staff of 400, under the leadership of the Presiding Bishop, serve as administrators, advisors, conveners, partners, and resource people for the ELCA and its ministries. Staff lead the work of national, domestic, and global ministries and programs including Lutheran Disaster Response, ELCA World Hunger, Service & Justice, Christian Community and Leadership, and Innovation. We are also home to five of our separately incorporated ministries: The Mission Investment Fund of the ELCA, Women of the ELCA, Lutheran Men in Mission, the ELCA Foundation and the ELCA Federal Credit Union.
About the position
The Office of the Presiding Bishop is responsible for the administration of the churchwide organization. Every function of the Office of the Presiding Bishop serves to support and guide members of this church as we wonder, discover and boldly participate in what God is up to in the world.
This position is part of the Theological Discernment, Justice, and Ecumenical and Inter-Religious Relations team and provides coordination and administrative services for social teaching development, especially task force meetings and communication. The position includes significant work with meetings logistics and communication, as well as in sustaining and developing collaborative relationships with ELCA members, churchwide staff and others in support of the work.
This is a 1/4-time (10 hours/week), non-exempt (hourly), term-contract employee position (beginning in June 2024 and ending March 2028 ) , hybrid/Chicago-based position. This position requires being in the office on a regular basis.
Candidates for this position must reside within the fifty United States or the District of Columbia and be authorized to work lawfully in the United States. In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification document form upon hire.
1. Provide logistical support before, during, and after social statement or social message meetings and consultations. Prepare materials for presentation and publication as needed. Facilitate receipt/distribution of meeting documents, guest/participant hospitality, and assistance for presenters.
2. Prepare and send regular communications to and on behalf of social statement task forces and social message consultation groups.
3. Liaise with Strategic Communications to coordinate public communications.
4. Coordinate management of financial matters related to the work, including contracts and reimbursements.
5. Engage in paper and electronic document management, including efforts to archive and maintain files in office.
6. Attend social teaching task force meetings and provide logistical support for task force, as needed.
7. Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
1. 2 years of experience with administrative support and/or meeting planning experience preferred.
2. Exceptional oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate sensitive information with tact and discretion on behalf of the church.
3. Some experience in development, design, copyediting and proofreading of communications.
4. Experience and skill with Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, etc.) and communication systems preferred; experience with financial management system (Workday software) is helpful.
5. Familiarity with Lutheran theology, teaching, and practice, and with the mission and structure of the ELCA preferred. Appreciation for the mission, vision and values of the ELCA.
6. Understanding of and commitment to intersectional gender and racial justice, diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism.
7. Ability to organize effective agendas and logistics for meetings from inception to completion to follow up.
8. Ability to manage and complete projects after instruction, and with minimal oversight.
Physical
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone. This position requires sitting for long periods of time. Employee will occasionally need to lift boxes or materials up to 15 pounds.
