Position Summary:

Direct, manage and coordinate all areas of production and related services through supervisors and lead people to achieve timely production of quality products at the most economical cost and in the proper quantities, ensuring on-time delivery. Responsible for the operational improvements of all aspects of the plant production and process controls. Responsible for facility maintenance (building and grounds) and equipment, as well as supervising Environmental/Safety/Quality personnel. Organize and lead the Continuous Improvement Program to include cost savings projects and administration and documentation of the Idea program. Work with management in planning and implementing Quality/Continuous Improvement (QCI) activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Direct and manage all production-related departments (including maintenance and prototype) in general administration and enforcement of company rules and regulations. This includes employee selection and development, employee relations, discipline, safety, etc.
  • Plan, organize and coordinate manufacturing procedures and operations to accomplish objectives in accordance with production and delivery schedules, skills and manufacturing capacities to maintain profitable operation.
  • Provide technical expertise in terms of manufacturing, materials, lead-time, equipment workflow, resources to manufacture new products or improve manufacturing efficiency of existing products, while maintaining or improving quality.
  • Control labor and material variances through adequate supervision and cost monitoring.
  • Moderate production meetings to assist in planning and making recommendations on matters having to do with manufacturing operations.
  • Manage finished goods inventory and warehouse facilities.
  • Remain abreast of new manufacturing technology, equipment processes and management techniques through publications, seminars, workshops, or attending related shows or exhibits.
  • Conduct timely performance reviews of direct reports, recommending training, changes of wage or status, updating or creating job descriptions, and setting agreeable goals and objectives.
  • Maintain an efficient and skilled workforce through formal and informal training and work skill enhancement in order to meet projected workload, advancements in technology and compliance with Quality System requirements.
  • Prepare reports and make presentations to members of plant, division and/or corporate management related to production performance.
  • Ensure equipment receives regular preventative maintenance and that the plant’s housekeeping exceeds safety standards.
  • Develop the most efficient way to employ manpower, machines, materials, information, and energy to manufacture the product or provide a service.
  • Develop management control systems and processes to measure productivity, i.e., OEE (Overall Equipment Efficiency), OTD (On Time Delivery), etc.
  • Analyze cycle times to improve/increase productivity. Design/improve production planning and control systems and resolve production process problems.
  • Study material flow, operations sequence and recommend/implement appropriate changes.
  • Evaluate the effects of product design changes.
  • Design/improve manufacturing process methods to assure product quality. Assist in setting goals, and planning projects that will meet corporate and plant Quality/CI objectives.
  • Oversee the administration of the Ideas program and cost savings projects.
  • Assist management in maintaining the Plant within environmental and quality performance regulations.
  • Key member of the Safety Committee.
  • Assure all plant emergency systems are functioning properly.
  • Responsible for developing, communicating, improving, and adhering to safety policies in all work environments and other areas.
  • Participate in financial planning, cost/benefit analysis for building, grounds and plant equipment.
  • Continue Quality/CI self-education training, Grand Kaizen and participating in other skill enhancement activities.
  • Assure that plant personnel are trained and help develop their Quality/CI skills. Conduct Quality/CI skill enhancement sessions.
  • Help develop Team Members’ skills; CI, problem solving, Quality, and provide leadership.
  • Supervise maintenance department and plan work for maintenance employees, assuring Preventative Maintenance processes are followed. Assist and provide maintenance resources for CI/Kaizen projects.
  • Work closely with equipment suppliers, plant staff, and Continuous Improvement Specialist to assure the successful operation of the plant.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Educational Requirements / Experience:

  • Business, manufacturing or engineering-related degree or equivalent years of related work experience. A formal apprenticeship or courses/seminars in supervision would be considered a plus.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related production management experience from a similar type manufacturing company or 12 years of management experience from a non-related type of manufacturing.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ continuous improvement experience with Lean Enterprise and/or Toyota Production System as demonstrated through participation in and leadership of CI events/projects.
  • Possess Quality/CI program certification and/or demonstrate competency.

Additional Attributes:

  • Excellent verbal communication skills, as well as the ability to utilize Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and E-mail to effectively communicate with others.
  • Create presentations as necessary.
  • Ability to work with a variety of individuals at all levels.
  • Perform basic data analyses as required.
  • Create charts, templates, flow maps for standards and clear communication of information.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Work independently and communicate effectively with others.
  • Excellent Project Management skills.
  • Lead and manage a team to bring closure to projects.
  • Systematic and analytical approach to problem solving.
  • Proficient with the concepts and tools of Quality Tools and Lean Manufacturing used in Kaizen analysis.
  • Proficient with Value Stream Mapping tools.
  • Apply lean manufacturing tools and train plant associates on various lean tools and techniques, as well as become the resource “expert” for lean methodologies.
  • Track and report plant improvement progress.
  • Work with team members and supervision to sustain results by monitoring 30, 60 and 90 day follow up reports.
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills with aptitude for facilitating teams and/or activities. Effectively lead a team through an entire event – from training through report-out.
  • Show initiative, desire to drive change and motivation to exceed expectations.
  • Skilled in statistical knowledge and the ability to apply statistics to product and process improvement projects.
  • Competent in Lean principles, including Waste elimination, Pull systems, Kanban, Visual workspace, One Piece Flow, Flow Production, Set-Up Reduction, Standardized Work, Variation Reduction, Error Proofing, Total Productive Maintenance, Ergonomics, Problem Solving, and Level Loading.
