What is this job? The Special Education Teacher is a hands-on position responsible for implementing engaging instruction for Strawbridge School students. This position requires excellent planning to meet the necessary Career and College Readiness Standards along with the academic and behavioral needs outlined in each student’s Individualized Education Program. The position is highly collaborative and requires excellent documentation and organizational skills.

What is the Strawbridge School?The Strawbridge School is a non-public school approved by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). The program provides small, caring classroom settings guided by certified special education teachers.
The school serves youth with emotional, behavioral, and/or intellectual challenges in a supportive and nurturing environment. Our team addresses the unique educational needs of students who have been unable to thrive in a public-school setting. The Strawbridge School is one of several programs provided by Everstand, a national children and family-focused charity headquartered in Baltimore.
New name, same enduring commitment.This year, we are celebrating 150 years of serving children and families through our work to enrich communities, one family at a time. As we reflected on our history and contemplated our bright future, one thing become clear: the name “Board of Child Care” no longer represented the vast array of services we offer. We are thrilled to share that our name has changed to Everstand! Our holistic range of residential, mental and behavioral health support, trauma recovery, case management, and educational services will continue to grow and expand. - Demonstrate and practice trauma informed leadership.
- Provides differentiated, direct instruction to students with emotional, behavioral, and/or intellectual challenges.
- Develops lesson plans and instructional materials to provide individualized and group instruction in order to meet the needs of each student as stated in their Individualized Education Program.
- Interprets both informal, and classroom-based assessment for students in order to make instructional decisions. Collects data on student performance so as to improve student outcomes and direct instruction. Administers and interprets formal assessments as appropriate.
- Serves as a member of the school Individualized Education Program Team.
- Participates in the educational planning and develops student Individualized Education Programs (utilizing Maryland Online web-based program).
- Works collaboratively with team members to effectively implement student Individualized Education Programs.
- Consults supervisor regarding materials, equipment, and instructional strategies appropriate for students with disabilities.
- Provides guidance and direction along with planning daily activities for assigned Program.
- Ensures that the classroom staff adheres to all polices, practices and expectations for a professional and learning environment.
- Attends and actively participates in staff/faculty meetings, Interdisciplinary Meetings, staff/teacher meetings, Planning Conferences, in-service training programs, etc.
- Maintains professional competence by participating in one after school workshop per quarter.
- Employs provided electronic tools for grade reporting and attendance (e.g. Jupiter Grades), leave reporting (e.g. ADP), and IEP documentation (e.g. Maryland Online) etc.
- Observes and assesses student behavior to establish and maintain discipline in the classroom conducive to effective learning.
- Communicates with students when academic and behavioral problems arise.
- Demonstrates knowledge of students’ Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBA) and consistently implements Behavioral Intervention Plans (BIP).
- Establishes and maintains a safe physical environment conducive to learning.
- Plans and executes enrichment experiences such as field trips.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
- Certificated by Maryland State Department of Education in special education, or in the process of having an application for provisional certification reviewed by the Maryland State Department of Education
- Talent with a provisional certificate must:
- Be enrolled in an educator preparation program and provide verification of enrollment into an educator preparation program.
- Have a minimum of 6 semester hours of coursework each year toward the professional certificate
- Provide Praxis I (composite or core) and Praxis II scores
