Job Summary: To deliver a broad range of general diagnostic and therapeutic psychiatric behavioral health services to adolescent, adult, and geriatric clients with mental illness, chemical dependency, dual diagnosis, or mental illness with mental retardation, depending on the nurse practitioner’s areas of specialization and experience. Provides teaching for the family and individual related to the health status utilizing additional resources as needed and makes appropriate referrals to other health professionals and community agencies. Prescribes pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies as needed and provides the relevant patient education related to these prescriptions. All the above practices will be provided under the direction of a Psychiatrist of the Samaritan Center based on the attached Collaborative Practice Agreement.

Monday - Thursday ( 4 - 10 hour shifts )

1. Responsible for the examination, diagnosis, and treatment of emotional disorders and psychiatric dysfunctions within the nurse practitioner’s age specific competencies

A. Outpatient evaluation and therapy and other medical services

B. Inpatient evaluation and therapy and other medical services

2. Will offer supervision and consultation to other staff members. This includes regular staffing of evaluations performed by clinical staff of the Samaritan Center. These evaluations are of a routine and emergency nature.

3. Maintains medical staff privileges with Good Samaritan Hospital. Demonstrates professional growth and participates in continuing education to satisfy hospital and professional requirements.

4. Attends and participates in psychiatric sections meeting, Good Samaritan Hospital medical staff committees, quality improvement committees and supervision with the Center Medical Director.

5. Supports and promotes the mission, policies, and guidelines for the Samaritan Center.

a. Education: Graduation from an accredited Advance Nurse Practitioner (ANP) School of Nursing, and completion of

approved residency in general psychiatry.

b. Experience: Must be licensed to practice medicine in the State of Indiana.

c. Licensure and Certification: License and Certification as stated in Bylaws. Registered Nurse license from Indiana State Board of Nursing. Nurse Practitioner authorization from the Indiana Health Professional Bureau.

d. Essential Technical/Motor Skills: Physical assessment skills, psychomotor skills.

e. Interpersonal Skills: Diplomacy, tactfulness, negotiation, written and verbal communication skills and effective problem-solving skills.

f. Essential Physical Skills: Sufficient stamina and mobility to provide direct patient care, i.e.; must be able to bend, squat, twist and lift numerous times per day.

g. Essential Mental Abilities: Ability to assess, collect, record and interpret data. Ability to calculate medication dosages. Proficient in the care of all age groups according to Erickson’s “Life Cycle” stage 1-8.

h. Essential Sensory Requirements: Ability to visually assess clinical practice and patient conditions and to communicate with patients, co-workers, staff, physicians, students and patient’s families. Auditory ability to assess patients.
